Celem tekstu jest wskazanie zmian dotyczących natury encyklopedii w dobie kultury uczestnictwa. W artykule omówiono argumenty przemawiające za bezcelowością kategoryzowania Wikipedii jako encyklopedii, przedsta- wiając funkcyjne cechy różnicujące Wikipedię wobec tradycyjnych repozytoriów wiedzy. Następnie przytacza empiryczne wyniki badań poświęconych wiarygodności Wikipedii. Tekst kończą uwagi na temat encyklopedii wirtualnej będącej interesującym przykładem organizacji w sieci w dobie kultury uczestnictwa oraz na temat kierunków badań ważnych dla zrozumienia tego zjawiska z perspektywy humanistycznej.
