Human life is abundant in events which have impact on people’s life paths, which in turn influence their behavioural patterns shaping them to deviate from the accepted standards. Certainly, the experience of disability is an event which superimposes numerous and wide-ranging biopsychosocial consequences for those affected by it. It is a difficult situation that limits one’s potential to satisfy one’s needs and to meet the expectations of the public. Young people, who desperately look for ways to cope with such a situation, often resort to risky behaviours (e.g.smoking, drinking alcohol, early sexual initiation, aggression) and frequently find themselves in dire straits. However, experience demonstrates that such measures not only fail to solve problems, but intensify them, often leading to social maladjustment, which then may end up in social exclusion. Therefore, risky behaviour, particularly in adolescents with disabilities, appears to be a serious problem thatrequires diagnosis and intervention. The aim of this discussion is to demonstrate risky behaviour in young people with disabilities and to look at it through the prism of their conditioning rooted in their attempts (usually unsuccessful) to cope with a difficult life situation maimed by disability.

The birth of a child is a major event in family life, which makes parents take on an important role in their lives, characterised by new tasks, chief among which are the care and upbringing of their offspring. Unfortunately, in many families, some factors emerge that may affect their functioning, disrupt the course of family life, and leave a permanent mark on the family’s history. Such a situation can be difficult for many –and many parents find the process of accepting a child with a disability (Down syndrome) and themselves as parents of a child with Down syndrome a long and arduous journey, since taking care of a child, upbringing and supporting their development is an issue in itself, but also a challenge for parents. In many cases, both the child and their parents need support in their daily life, ensuring their high quality of life. The objective of this study is to outline the functioning of families of children with Down syndrome. Introduction. A child’s disability always, to differing degrees, affects the fulfilment of the function of a family, shapes intra-family relationships, and determines the family lifestyle. Family life abounds in numerous and varied demanding situations, which can be both an insurmountable problem, and a challenge that one just has to face – alone or with such important social support. Aim. The aim of the research is to show the functioning of families with children with intellectual disabilities. Due to the complexity of the issues, only selected aspects of family functioning were diagnosed, showing at the same time changes in the realization of family functions as a result of the appearance of children with intellectual disabilities. Methods. The study had the qualitative character using the method of individual cases. The interview technique and the disposition to the interview were used. The research group consisted of 15 families of children with intellectual disabilities. Interviews were conducted with 12 mothers and 3 fathers of pupils receiving various forms of special education, attending elementary schools in Zielona Góra. Results and conclusions. The study shows the functioning of families with children with disabilities. Undoubtedly, we can speak about dynamic changes and modifications in the almost all functions performed by families. The functioning of families experiencing a child’s disability is affected by many factors: coping with the demanding situation by parents, their process of adaptation to the child’s disability, the level of child’s functioning, and the social support.

Wprowadzenie. Materiały i metody. Badania przeprowadzono w nurcie badań jakościowych, metodą indywidualnych przypadków, z wykorzystaniem techniki wywiadu i zastosowaniu dyspozycji do wywiadu. Grupę badawczą stanowiło 15 rodzin dzieci z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. Wywiadu udzieliło 12 matek i 3 ojców uczniów różnych form edukacji specjalnej uczęszczających do szkół podstawowych na terenie Zielonej Góry. Wyniki. Przeprowadzone badania pokazały funkcjonowanie rodzin dzieci z niepełnosprawnością. Bez wątpienia należy mówić o dynamice zmian w tych rodzinach, o zmianach w wypełnianiu praktycznie wszystkich funkcji realizowanych przez rodziny. Wnioski.
