This paper deals with the some of the important aspects of the energy market in the economic policy of the Slovakia. The entrance to the EU a world globalization have changed many parts of this policy, minimally for three reasons: European energy demand is increasing, the global climate is rapidly changing and the former energy reserves in this area are dwindling. Because exhaustion of all own conventional energy reserves and the high level of the dependency on the import from one side and Slovakia has strategic position in the European distribution network from other side, it has to prepare the new energy strategy. The need for more competition on the Slovak energy market will be connected with gas and nuclear energy as well as with declining consumption and promotion of effective use of renewable resources.

The paper analyses the status and importance of natural gas for the overall development of the world economy with application to the EU. It acknowledges that rapid depletion of all other energy sources represents a significant alternative, the disposable reserves of which might considerably contribute to satisfaction of energy needs in the EU. They emphasize idiosyncrasies in crude oil trading as well as its ever stronger position in energy and heat production while regarding coordination of energy policy and strengthening the negotiating potential vis-a-vis major natural gas suppliers as the most effective way of satisfying the Union's energy needs.
