The goal of the paper is to analyze how members of Polish society perceive young people (around 30 years of age) and old people (over 65), their social and cultural capital, their position in society, and the roles they should play in private and public life before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Polish society is aging and the birth rate is low. Analysis demonstrates that certain opinions about the old and young are common among Polish citizens and the factors that in other countries differentiate opinions in this regard do not do so in Poland. The image of older people is based on stereotypes. Young people in particular believe that seniors should not be active on the labor market or in politics but should provide informal help to the young generation in the private sphere. The young generation is more individualistically oriented, while older people are more concerned with the collective.

The author discusses selected aspects of the setting in which Polish higher educational establishments have been functioning since 1990 and compares the dynamics of academic careers over several generations, making allowance for the two sexes and the disciplines in which these careers are pursued. Her main concern and hypothesis focus on the relations between the conditions of scientific research and education offered by the higher education system in Poland in the nineties and the dynamics of scientific careers. Reduced financing of academic teaching and research and the deteriorating material situation of people employed in this sector have led to the slowing down of scientific careers in terms of the time needed to obtain consecutive degrees. The next hypothesis which the author puts to test is concerned with the changing structure of research staffs. Deteriorating conditions on two dimensions, the possibility of conducting scientific research, and the possibility of achieving satisfactory material rewards from work at research institutes and higher education institutions, have changed the structure of employment. For these reasons and also because of the increasing proportion of female students, observed earlier, the number of women on university faculties is continuing it grow, albeit slowly. The author bases her discussion on analysis of statistical data on higher education institutions throughout the country and a case study of one of the biggest university in Poland.

Autorka koncentruje się na wybranych aspektach sytuacji, w jakiej funkcjonują uczelnie w Polsce od 1990 r, porównaniu przebiegu karier w różnych generacjach z uwzględnieniem podziału według płci i dziedzin, w których owe kariery przebiegają. Główna rozważana hipoteza dotyczy związku między sytuacją nauki i edukacji oferowanej przez szkolnictwo wyższe w Polsce w latach dziewięćdziesiątych a przebiegiem karier naukowych. Spadek nakładów na kształcenie i badania oraz pogarszanie się warunków materialnych osób zatrudnionych w tym sektorze powoduje spowolnienie karier naukowych, mierzonych czasem osiągania kolejnych stopni. Następna weryfikowana hipoteza dotyczy zmian w strukturze pracowników naukowych. Pogarszanie się ich sytuacji w dwóch wymiarach - możliwości prowadzenia badań naukowych oraz uzyskiwania satysfakcjonujących warunków materialnych z pracy w instytucjach badawczych i na uczelniach - powoduje zmianę struktury zatrudnionych. Z tych przyczyn, a także w efekcie wcześniej zaobserwowanego wzrostu udziału kobiet wśród studentów, następuje dalsze, aczkolwiek powolne, zwiększenie liczby kobiet wśród osób pracujących na stanowiskach nauczycieli akademickich. W artykule wykorzystano dane statystyczne dotyczące sytuacji szkolnictwa wyższego w całym kraju oraz przedstawiono studium przypadku uczelni (na przykładzie jednego z największych uniwersytetów w Polsce).
