There are 69 bioethics commissions in Poland that give their opinions on scientific research (experiments) on people. After explaining the necessary terminological issues regarding the classification of scientific research in medicine, the legal and ethical bases of the commissions’ activity, and the principles of assessing and controlling medical research, the author addresses the scope of independence and integrity of the bioethics commission. In the final part of the article, the author discusses the objections raised against bioethics commissions – especially, those concerning their independence, objectivity and reliability in the assessment of research proposals. The evaluation of activities of the bioethics commission in terms of its independence and reliability is positive – it is an institution of social control of medical research (especially, of experiments) on people. This control is not complete; however, it contributes to maintaining an adequate level of scientific research and allows for the protection of study participants.

The concept of the quality of life: The medical and the bioethical aspect The concept of the quality of life initially contained mainly objective indicators. It was only later that it was extended so as to include the subjective ones as well. Upon its transfer from its original medical context into the social sciences, the concept of the quality of life has inspired a new approach to sick persons. It is now acknowledged that it is not enough to merely prolong a life. It also has to meet the standards generally recognized by active, healthy people. In the assessment of the quality of life both objective (state of human health and socio-economic status) and subjective (satisfaction with life and perception of each other) indicators are used. It is used, among other things, to evaluate the effects of medical and non-medical health care and medical intervention. In bioethics, it is noted that the term diminishes the value of human life. The methods used to assess the value of human life based on economic analysis and the measuring of the quality of life can lead to undesirable consequences. Conclusion: on the one hand, the estimation of the quality of life is imminent for various reasons; on the other hand, however, it raises ethical objections.

The paper concentrates on the problem of company codes of ethics. We want to present how the authors define what is desirable for company and stakeholders. From our point of view, company codes of ethics contain different axiological preferences. Our aim is to focus on these aspects of codes which are related with problems such as: way of creation code of ethics, perceived role of code of ethics, attitude towards main stakeholders. Our analysis will show how companies defines what is good in their activity (and what is good in general). Evaluation their ethicality will be based on comparison of contents company codes of ethics (demands, liabilities) with requirements of the business ethicists.
