This article is an attempt to recreate the intuitions which accompanied Leśniewski when he was creating his calculus of names called Ontology. Although every reconstruction is to some extent an interpretation, and as such may be defective, still, there are reasons justifying such reconstruction. The most important justification is the fact that both Leśniewski and his commentators stressed that ontology originated from reflections about ordinary language, in which sentences such as A is B appear in one of the meanings associated with them in Ontology, and that the users of the Polish language use such sentences accordingly and properly identify them. Assumed it is so, let us try, based on Leśniewski’s guidelines as well as comments and elaborations on Ontology (Leśniewski 1992: 364-382, 608-609; Kotarbiński 1929: 227-229; Rickey 1977: 414-229; Simons 1992: 244; Lejewski 1960: 14-29), to evaluate the accuracy of this approach, referring also to certain knowledge of the Polish language. To make it clear, this article is not about Ontology as a formal theory of language. It is solely an attempt to assess whether some syntactical constructs of the Polish language and this language’s properties are significant conditions of a proper understanding of Ontology, and whether Ontology is, in fact, in a relationship with the ethnic language of its author.

The aim of the article is to present arguments to support the thesis that the text by G. W. Leibniz concerning the repair and improvement of the German language can be includedin his works as a political thinker in the part where philosopher undertakes the absolutely fundamental issue of establishing the basis of modern German national community. The project of constructions of e new enlightened German society based on a firm linguistic foundation laid out in Unforgreiffliche Gedanken is a mature thought underestimated political plan of the philosopher. Leibniz as a political thinker never became known in cultural and social circles as initiator of specific modernization actions. Including the text of treatise into the linguistic works of the philosopher was the reason of the limitation of its reception to a small audience. Leibniz – political thinker shared the fate of Leibniz – logician, whose contribution to the development of logic and mathematics was unraveled only by the 20th century. Incomprehension of his contemporaries and the oblivion of his posterity caused that even if Leibniz could became the father of the modern German nation, he has remained in its consciousness mainly as an esoteric philosopher.

The deliberations contained herein concern the issues touched upon in a short work titled A philosophical discourse concerning speech written by Geraud de Cordemoy (1626-1684), a French philosopher and thinker who – in his own words – was a firm believer in the philosophy of Descartes and claimed to be a Cartesian. Apart from Logic and Grammar from Port-Royal, Cartesian literature of the 17th does not present a single other separate work devoted to the philosophy of language and the properties of speech. Aside from several interesting topics discussed by the author, one particular issue deserves special attention – namely, the occasionalistic interpretation of the mechanism of human communication. Still, this concept does not tower over other issues which, when reflected upon within the framework of Cartesian doctrine, gain new meaning in the context of contemporary discussion on the phenomenon of speech, its ontogenesis, and social functions. The article describes Leibnizian project of modernisation of the country based on a reform of the language and intellectual reconstruction of German society. The project results directly from Leibnizian epistemology and philosophy of language. His vision of the state is tightly connected to the concept of society based on knowledge. Knowledge is above all archived in a language and language is the best mirror of the mind for a philosopher. The subject of analysis is a short Leibniz’s treatise Unvorgreifliche Gedancken, interpreted by the author in the context of the philosopher’s political thought.
