The objective of the article is a preliminary recognition of auto/bio/geo/graphy as a special type of an autobiographic or biographic account. Its constitutive attribute is reference to geographic determinants of life trajectories, particularly autobiographic places (a term proposed by Małgorzata Czermińska). In autonarratives they fulfill a causative function, activating autobiographic memory and physical memory. Problems of connections of autobiography and geography was described on the basis of world literature (e.g. J.M. Coetzee) and Stefan Szymutko’s prose.

Postmodern regionalism was one of the most important movements in Polish cultural and literary discourse in the 1990s. Its characteristic features are: reduction or rejection of the national metanarration, tension between centre and regions (from anticentralism to interactional relation), emphasis on difference rather than identity, experience of deterritoriality and dislocation of the regions, locality as a reaction to globalization. This new regionalism needs, however, a new point of view and new research methods. This article presents a proposal for a new approach to local narration in the comparative method, since, as Tadeusz Sławek claims, comparative literary studies are especially predestined to research on the space “between” and on crossing the boundaries. Comparative studies are understood as “placing” (concept of Siegbert Prawer), a comparison of different cultural geographies and their mutual explication. The subject of such comparative studies can be, firstly, Polish borderlands and different local narrations (national, ethnic, regional). Secondly, such regional literature can be considered from the point of view of interregional comparative studies which examine the relation between particular regions and the centre, the canon and the history of national literature.

The subject of this article is the problem of relations between the literary topics of the garden and geography. As the method of analysis applied here, geopoetics pays special attention to the traces of geographical location in literature, to territorial imagology and imaginary geographies. This article investigates the way in which literary conventions and cultural frames transform the genius loci. This problem is analyzed on the basis of selected texts of Polish literature (by S. Trembecki, S. Goszczyński, J. Stempowski, J. Iwaszkiewicz).

This paper aims at a comparative study of a few contemporary approaches to the relation between geography and literature. The first among these is geopoetics, by K. White, which is a project based on anthropology and philosophy. The second is geocriticism, by B. Westphal, which is a comparative literary geography. The third approach is geoculturology, by W. Szczukin, linked to the Russian semiotics of culture.

The article is an analysis of the novel Cygarniczka (Mouthpiece) by Artur Gruszecki, published in 1904. It focuses on the situation of women workers in a cigar factory in Krakow, their submission to the factory regime, which is another embodiment of the patriarchal power over the female body. On the other hand, the article emphasizes the acts and microstrategies of resistance presented in the novel, proving the liberation of women from the patriarchal order. The interpretation takes into account the double emancipatory context at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries – both women and workwomen. The novel presents progressive solutions concerning the working conditions of female workers and is close to emancipated women.

Powieść prezentuje progresywne rozwiązania dotyczące warunków pracy robotnic i bliskie środowiskom emancypantek.
