Analysis of economic area as an object for study from science of science perspective requires outlining its universal and specific features. At the same time, formulation of multiple sub-problems occurring in analysis of the economic area as an object of the economic theory leads to cognitive shifts requiring elaboration of a new methodology for relevant studies. This methodology requires going beyond the boundaries of economic (production) system, to account for the specifics of the contemporary political and economic system. This approach helps to see the central role of phenomena such as supranational elites and supranational structures. The essence of supranational elites is that these are appointed ones, and not ones standing out for their professional competencies or social action. They already have autonomous economic interests (as economic interactions became more sophisticated) at supranational level (subeconomy), not matching national interests. In the context of political and economic analysis, appointed elites are to be regarded as monopolies, which can negotiate and agree their interests easier than small businesses. Supranational structures (international organizations or transnational corporations), having not yet become a basis for the world economy (megaeconomy), are nevertheless becoming autonomous actors (that is, competitors) at this level, as competition of capitals (through competition of countries) is being replaced by competition of alliances and corporations.
