Decision theory deals with the problem situation in which it is necessary to choose among at least two modes of actions. Decision theory includes the study of optimal action, determined by probability and utility of different outcomes. The author identifies and briefly describes the most important aspects of decision making in medicine and healthcare, highlighting its characteristics and uniqueness.

Conjoint analysis is a survey method of data collection and analysis. Measuring preferences, creation and interpretation of conjoint analysis models, as well as, practical applications of the method in health care are presented in the paper.

Economic evaluation in health care schemes starts to play a crucial role in both academic area as well as in medical decision making process. The aim of the study was to survey health care professionals, also responsible for hospital management, to gather their opinions on the application of economic evaluations as regards decision making in drug management. Applying a seven-item validated questionnaire, the authors surveyed 99 medical doctors from 7 hospitals of different reference level. Main information sources concerning therapeutic choices were identified, including creation of hospital formularies. Principal barriers to application of pharmaco-economic criteria were identified, chances of their broader usage in drug management discussed and preferred type of pharmaco-economic evaluation as well as its perspectives indicated.
