Attention given in Poland to the problems of agriculture is greater than its economic significance. The Polish society is seriously concerned over agriculture's destiny in the European Union. Some of the fears felt by Polish citizens have been dispelled owing to an information campaign carried out prior to the national referendum on Poland's accession to EU and the results of negotiations conducted in Copenhagen. The positive outcome of the referendum can be largely attributed to the Polish society's confidence in the principles of the Common Agricultural Policy and, especially, the guarantees of financial support for agriculture and its non-production functions.

The complex of the Polish society's views on the subject of agriculture is marked by ideology. The place that rural areas, agriculture and persons working in agriculture occupy in social awareness is far more important than the role that agriculture plays in the generation of GDP or in the incomes of farmers' families. In the light of nation-wide representative surveys, views concerning agriculture are incoherent, naive and often false. On one hand, these views reflect the feeling that harm was done to agriculture and farmers in the more and less distant past and is being done also in the present situation and, on the other hand, they reflect the tendency to overestimate the role of agriculture, the conditions existing in agriculture (such as the quality of soils and qualifications of farmers) and the results achieved in agriculture (high labour productivity, ecological products). They also reflect the prevalent conviction that agriculture may be the locomotive of Poland's economic development. The ideologically-marked and emotional approach of the Polish people to the problems of agriculture can be attributed to many factors: the rural roots of the Polish society, the fact that agriculture has become a 'dressing for the wounds' of Polish transformation, which eases unemployment and poverty, and to the information campaign preceding the referendum on accession to the EU, which concentrated chiefly on agriculture. The favourable changes in the picture of Polish agriculture have occurred also under the influence of its environmental, social and cultural functions.

The research conducted recently concerning the agriculture and rural communities are showing that local, peasant communities are loosing the sense of the communities. It becomes noticeable that local bonds are disintegrated. Community spirit and common experience are becoming a history. The diversifications and disagrarisation of agricultural production is becoming more clear. The differentiation in terms of goals and conditions of agricultural production increases. The meaning of traditional, informal bonds uniting the local society is constantly diminishing. The network of suplocal bonds, relaying on common interest and common economic goals of more formal character, are growing and getting more intense.

In recent years the rural population has been characterised by dynamic migration behaviours. There still exists a large migration potential attributable to excessive labour resources, to the weakness of local labour markets and lower earnings in comparison with incomes earned by the urban population. Despite the diminishing profitability of finding employment abroad and an improvement in the conditions prevailing at home (lower unemployment, acreage payments for farmers) the tendency towards migration continues. The residents of villages, farmers included, show a predisposition to earn money in the lower segments of the labour market, which can be attributed to some features of their ethos as well as to their attitudes and skills. Some of these features are alien to the younger generation of rural residents who are determined to become educated in order to win in the future a better position on labour markets in Poland or abroad.

The authoress concentrates her attention and research on social and economic changes occurring in one of the villages situated in the 'Mazury' lake district. The historical perspective and micro-scale have allowed her to show the dynamic of changes and to identify its main actors. The process of losing agrarian character proceeded from specialisation of production to economic activities not related to agriculture. Vocational diversification, intensifying for 30 years and, consequently, the diversification of incomes, have been accompanied by the weakening of local social ties and the loss of features characteristic for peasant communities.

The fundamental condition of the development of agriculture in Poland is making farmers aware of the inevitable changes and perfection needs. Some farmers, however, perceive them as yet another 'harm' that is being done to farmers and agriculture. Yet they should be regarded as another stage of the Polish agriculture development, at which the old models do not match the current standards and requirements of the more and more competitive market.
