In 1996 a number of artifacts of a type suggesting Palaeolithic provenance were found in a site at Witów in Western Tatras at 936 m above sea leavel. A similar find was reported in the late 19th century from Tatranská Polianka in the Slovak Tatras at 1090 m above sea level. The present find opens a new perspective in the search for Palaeolithic remains in the Tatras and in the Tatra caves. Key words:

The research carried out in 1984 on the site Lipnica Wielka 8 in the Orawa Basin yielded Late Mesolithic artifacts, among them a triangle of the Pienki type, scrapers, and numerous forms made with the splintering technique. The presence of the Cracovian Jurassic flint, radiolarite from the Pieniny Mts., chert of the Mikuszowice type, and rock from Slovakia indicates that the Mesolithic group from Lipnica Wielka 8 penetrated central and southern Lesser Poland and northern Slovakia.
