The essay has been thought to be dominated by men. Nowadays, efforts have been made to analyze female essay writing and its differences from the standard model. Erika Mann’s works bear marks of essay writing; the author seems to draw on other forms of journalistic writing in order to eventually reach the form in question with the openness of the genre. The focus of the following article is one of Mann’s unpublished works that proves her involvement in politics and her understanding of contemporary social issues.

Der Essay gilt in der Literaturkritik eher als eine Männerdomäne. In der Forschung verweist man aber immer häufiger auf die Andersartigkeit des weiblichen Essays und dessen Abweichung vom Gattungsmuster. Diese Probleme treffen auch auf Erika Manns Schreiben zu. Auch in ihrem Schaffen lassen sich essayistische Merkmale erkennen: die Autorin scheint von anderen publizistischen Formen auszugehen, um schließlich den Essay – im Sinne des Prinzips der gattungsbezogenen Offenheit – anzustreben. Zum Gegenstand der Analyse wurde ein Text gewählt, der E. Manns politisches Engagement offenbart und auf ihre Sensibilität für gesellschaftliche Fragen hindeutet.
