Jeffrey C. Alexander, the founder of the strong program of cultural sociology, has described cultural meanings connected with the computer. Using the concepts of this prominent theoretician, this article relates his theories to the Internet. Perceiving the Net through a lens of cultural meanings, one must consider code and narrations. At the code level, the Internet falls within the sacral (sacred) sphere because it is believed to completely change social life. There are two narrations related to the Net, the positive and the negative one. In the case of the negative narration, many various motives may be identified. They are linked with the necessity to control both the very technology and its users. Although regulation of technology is primarily concerned with watching over the operations of large Internet firms, users must also develop appropriate habits in using the Net. The article is aimed at characterizing this regulation through qualitative analysis of publications by selected writers. The author argues that today the negative narration is connected with highlighting the misfortunes which are supposed to result from the lack of Internet regulations.

In the field of sociological studies of culture, more and more attention is being paid to the so-called prosumption. Based on the already existing general concepts related to it, the author presents its functioning in the sphere of popular culture, proposing the term: culture of prosumption. More and more frequently the enterprises within the entertainment industry seek their ways to success in a grass-root emergence of groups of acquirers working for a culture text. The use of the amateurs’ participation has become a dominant business model. The aim of the article is to organize the state-of-the-art knowledge on prosumption. Additionally, the author proposes a convenient way of diagnosing its mechanisms – it is easiest to describe the culture of prosumption through the analysis of the most engaged recipients, namely the fans, who constitute the avant-garde of the culture. The fans illustrate all the essential features of pop-culture prosumption.

Scientific reflections on information literacy have emphasized that young people must develop information competences related to using the Internet. Among various approaches, in the generic approach, catalogues of competences are constructed and treated as lists of desired behaviours and skills. The article aims to criticize this approach and its characteristic fetishization of theoretical categories; because of fetishization, these catalogues of competences fail to reflect social reality. The article presents the practices of female bloggers of the pro-ana movement: young girls who consider anorexia not a disease but a lifestyle. Using the method of content analysis, the author analysed 561 blog entries on 15 blogs and compared the collected data with a model catalogue of competencies created based on the literature. Perceived from the perspective of the generic approach, female pro-ana bloggers may be considered informationliterate. This implies that this approach is deficient as the pro-ana movement negatively impacts both healthy and ill girls. The analysis indicates that proponents of the generic standpoint should distinguish the so called competent negative uses.

The goal of this article is to show that collectors constitute a specific category of consumers. The article treats consumption through the lenses of high-speed society in which time becomes more and more important and scarce resource that people are constantly searching for. One of the reasons of this scarcity is that producers compete with each other. They want to grasp consumers’ time in order to make them spend it for consumption, and that is why one can speak about acceleration of time. Passionate and active acquiring is a thing that makes collectors similar to consumers, but the act of collecting is, in fact, opposed to fast consumption. It is based on different behaviors than those promoted by contemporary and very fast culture. Therefore, one who collects is engaged in a set of acts that are opposed to the time-consuming acquisitions. Collecting allows people to disengage from consumer culture that wants them to destroy old and acquire new goods. To collect is to selectively try to form a “whole” which constitutes a collection. Collecting reveals one’s assumption that objects are to be unique, not utilitarian, they are to be more than pure commodities. Given that collecting requires a lot of free time that is not used for consumption, it might be perceived as an act that is opposed to fast consumption.

Some participants of popular culture do not confine themselves to a one-time contact with a favorite book or movie. Instead, they return to fictional worlds, creating literary texts based on original works and sharing these texts with other followers of the same pop-products. A number of these fan-made pieces contain idealized characters whose mentalities tend to be very similar to the personalities of their creators. Such characters, who are known under the name of Mary Sue, frequently become an object of harsh criticism on the readers’ part. The paper presents various forms of so strong a negative reaction and describes its possible causes, basing on the analysis of a discourse created by the users of Mirriel Literary Forum (a message board which attracts people who are interested in amateurs’ literary pieces). The main goal of the paper is to demonstrate how the information obtained in discourse analysis may shed new light on the rules which govern the lives of all kinds of fan communities – most importantly, the rule of staying faithful to the object of one’s passion, that is, to the worlds created by professional authors. Apart from that, the paper demonstrates a concise discussion of the strong and weak points of the method employed.
