A debate about contemporary university is carried out on quite a few different levels and covers the following areas: idea of university, its autonomy, its adaptation (usefulness) to the labor market. The contemporary university is considered much more as pedagogical institution than research unit. The implemented reform of higher education system left many problems unregulated. The author presents the following: 1) an academic staff employment (work for more academic institution), 2) a relation between autonomy of the university and National Qualifications Framework, 3) research which has to be carried out on the imposed topics and commercialization of research results, 4) stability of academic human resources. Responsibility to the university cannot be designed and stimulated only by the law. The author suggests to return to the model of élite university which guarantees high quality of teaching.

A Paper Novum Organum for Upper Silesia is an indication of the important areas for the Upper Silesian culture. The author treats the problems of history, identity, nationality, language, population. Upper Silesia is the specific space, the classical borderland, the territory of presence of Polish, Czech and German traditions. The author describes some elements of the Silesian identity. The recognition of these elements is important to the process of building the new narrative for Upper Silesia after 1989. Is it possible to formulate the new narrative? Should we think about novum organum in reference to Francis Bacon’s thought about the modern mind? Can we give novum organum for this cultural territory? Upper Silesia is depicted as the embroiled community of residents with the weak historical and cultural memory but with strong feeling of the distinct identity. The author writes about the disintegration of the present Silesian culture. The past has gone, the strong former culture is finished but we still ask about the new Silesian narrative. We still prospect for gold.

What is exerting pressure on the human condition is his home. For the man, it is a native space, but the man is here also as figure which can be called 'a being of being in the world'. That is a reason - as author confirms - why the home is a space and the man is the one, who is organising this space, he is changing and settling. The house is a place of choice and both is a place of spiritual existence filled up the sacred and the profane. Its sacred is the result of the idea of the home as place what was hollowed. Moreover, the home as the element of the culture is something exceptional for the man. Author marks, the home is microworld, also it is knowledge about world, but it doesn't mean, that home is a truth about world and in that case of the world. The sacred of the home has a religious dimension, is a hallowed space for the household member, and the household member is supposed to be the one who is domesticated in this space, and not to settle it, because of Heidegger's settling refers to the whole of the space, and the space of the home is an allocated place also limited in that space. The author proves, settle should be a result from rules of the home, and these rules are organising the life of the home, are exerting influence on a hierarchy of values. The home in the dimension of the sacred is also the asylum, but it is not suppose to be only sheltering from the evil or escape into the safe space, but is supposed to be preserving own being for its own individuality. As the matter of fact, home is above all community and individual characters which are impressing on the home their own experiences and ideas. What is more important, the home is carrying its arche which is situated in the philosophical thought. The author assures - the question about the home is a basic question. That is reason why the next fundamental question asks about directions - where should I search the idea and spirit of the home? The man and the home are a delicate unity which can have different faces, but there is a perceptible truth, actually an event about reciprocities of the home and the man.

The paper concerns the problem of reason and faith on the basis of Christianity. The author points out the Bible as the text, which otherwise is rooted in Judaism and Christianity. The starting point for the analysis of reason and faith is the story of Doubting Thomas. The author interprets it as a scene in which the accent does not fall on lack of faith of Thomas, but the emergence of "reason on the sidelines." It indicates an intimacy of the unparalleled meeting of Thomas and Christ. To present this moment the author interprets the image of Gerard van Honthorst titled The Incredulity of Saint Thomas. The author shows the particular dangers associated with the use of reason and faith, what has an influence on human culture. The paper is an attempt to describe the relationship between faith and reason.

This article aims to analyze the concept of the art of living as the sense of living. The author indicates the summary dimension of the art of living and tries to show how important is the transfer of our thinking from the art to the sense of living. The author considers the relation between happiness, truth and beauty. The recognition of the ancient philosophy leads to knowledge about a nature of human being. These old questions lead to the same fears in the contemporary culture. If we wish to exist in full and truly, we need to take the challenge from what threatens the human existence the most. Paradoxically, the process of finding happiness, truth and beauty is the process of finding danger. Discussing the art of living beyond the thinking about the sense of living does not allow to see the complexity of the our experience.
