The article describes results of a questionnaire survey conducted on a sample of 382 persons - patients of the Geriatric Clinic in Lodz. The survey was focussed on reactions of the respondents to their retirement and on factors inducing retired people to continue their economic activity. The following demographic and social characteristics of the respondents were taken in to account: sex, age, marital status, family status, nature of performed work and materiál conditions. Objective characteristics of the respondents were correlated with their subjective motivation for willing or unwilling retirement, and undertaking income-earning work after obtaining their pensions.

The article presents the results of analysis performed on changes in the level of demographic old age coefficients in Poland during the period 1950-1982 and their differentiation in particular administrative provinces in 1962. The comparisons take in to account divisions of the Polish population in to urban and rural, and according to sex. While distinguishing groups of administrative provinces with a similar level of demographic old age coefficients, there was applied the quartile division of the variability area of these coefficients, This allowed to distinguish geographical areas characterized with a different intensity of the population aging process.

The aim of this article is to make an attempt to estimate the future demand of elderly peuple (60 and more years of age) for health resort treatment. There are presented five variants of projections till the year 2000 differing according to the accepted detaile assumptions. All the proposed projections of demand for health-resort treatment point at a considerable growth of this demand in the future - on the average of over 10 per cent every five years. The rate of growth in the number of treated men will be higher than that of women. It can be also expected w ith in the next 15 years that the number of rural in habitants going to health resorts will be growing much faster than the number of urban inhabitants. In order to satisfy health needs in this field it will be necessary to equip newly urbanized centres with rights of health resort towns. In the future, it will be necessary to take in to consideration the possibilities of developing health treatment in vacation and recreation places possessing natural conditions allowing to provide health-resort treatment.

In this article, there are presented results of the estimates made by means of a peculiar method of future projections based on coefficients of intensity with which people visit health care centres spontaneously and frequency during a year with which they seek medical advice. The studies encompassed among others district health care centres. Statistical observations allow to conclude that the necessity of ensuring proper medical care for elderly people in these district centres does not ensue from the fact of Lodz inhabitants’ aging alone but also from hanges in their structure according to age and sex, as well as education (providing other exogenous factors remain unchanged or are excluded). Equally significant is also the knowledge of inclinations to benefit from services of a specific type offered by the health care centres under survey. The projection compiled in th is way concerns the future demand for medical services expressed by the respondents or disclosed needs and not real magnitudes. This means that the projections are substantially underestimated. Nevertheless, in the analyzed perspective period, there should be expected a considerable - reaching about 50 per cent increase in the number of medical consultations and physicians due exclusively to changes in the number and structure of older population in Lodz according to age. These changes are quite differentiated in particular boundary years of the projection. In the projected period, the rate of changes in the number of ambulatory medical con sulta tio ns and home visits provided for elderly people will be spread unevenly. Moreover, the incrementin the number of home visits made by adistrict physician will be higher than the increment in the number of consultations provided in health care centres. In both cases, the number of medical consultations provided for men will increase much more than that for women.

Both results of observations and empirical studies have shown that an active life is the most appropriate way of preserving physical fitness in the old age. One of the forms of man's activity is sexual life. The latest medical, psychological and sociological studies indicate that sexual activity is an individual thing and that sexual needs may be felt and satisfied till old-old age. Ivor Feistein, a physician, in his book entitled "Sex and the longer life" quotes many examples of sexual interests of older people, and similarly to M.A.P. Sviland, a psychologist, he draws attention to social and psychological determinants of difficulties in satisfying sexual needs by elderly people. Undoubtedly, the biggest disaster of the old age is loneliness, and realization that a man is no longer needed. And that is why the problems of sex, having one's partner are of tremendous importance. The modern society, while removing elderly people, often quite automatically, from so many spheres of life and glorifying persistently the not always justified cult of youth, could display a little more tolerance, at least in such an intimate sphere of life as sexual life.

The article contains an analysis of changes in the number and structure of older population (aged 60 and over) in rural areas and agriculture of Poland over the years 1950-1983. There are presented both the factors behind the population aging process and its consequences. A special attention has been paid to the professional activity level of the agricultural population. The authors have proved that there exists a correlation between the size of farms and the age of their owners. The article ends with estimates concerning the number of farms run by elderly persons with are threatened with lack of successors.
