For 36 years Rev. Stefan Wyszynski (1901-1981) was a bishop of the Catholic Church, first bishop ordinary of the Lublin diocese, and in 1948-1981 - of the Gniezno archdiocese. The author intends to supplement the image of the primate's public activity by demonstrating the prime trends of work conducted upon a diocesan level. Problems of the local Church (the congregation and the clergy of the diocese) absorbed Wyszynski's time and energy to a degree only slightly lesser than questions of state importance. He based his assessments and observations on the outcome of an inquiry conducted primarily within the resources of the Archdiocesan Archive in Gniezno and the Office for Religious Denominations in Warsaw. In doing so, he referred to lower-rank documents (voivodeship and county on the one hand, and parish and deanery on the other hand), especially reports of bishop's inspections, written both by the Church and secular authorities. The article presents the specificity of the bishop's office, and provides a concise characteristic of the Gniezno archdiocese. The author discusses the purposes of canonical visitations as well as their typical course, thus trying to emphasise their significance for the parish community - the religious dimension and the semi-ludic character. He also examines other local religious ceremonies performed with the participation of the bishop. In an attempt at describing the nature of the supreme authority of Primate Wyszynski, the article delves into the range of his control, authority and familiarity with the problems of the archdiocese as well as the limits of the loyalty of the diocesan clergy towards the bishop ordinary (upon the basis of documents found in the National Remembrance Institute). From the parish–communal viewpoint the political aspects of the assorted undertakings pursued by the primate appear to be relegated to the background; on the other hand, the author considerably enhanced the image of the life of the Catholic Church (the clergy and the faithful) in the People's Republic of Poland.
