Present-day Hungarian usage is characterized by a simultaneous emergence of certain opposite tendencies that partially counterbalance one another. Such a pair of tendencies is the parallel use of compressed (synthetic) vs. expanded (analytic) expressions. This paper discusses the analytic tendency, presenting both older and more recent examples, the latter mainly gleaned from web pages. The synthetic and analytic tendencies mutually complement and balance one another. Synthetic expressions fit in well with the typological character of Hungarian; but changes that point in the analytic direction also contribute to the versatility, adaptability, and stylistic polyphony of this language.

Laszlo Cholnoky (1879-1929) was a talented prosaist belonging to the first generation of the journal Nyugat [The West]. His oeuvre fell into oblivion for some time, but recently it has started commanding renewed interest. This paper is a first attempt in the literature at introducing and characterizing Cholnoky's style. One of the main traits of Cholnoky's style is concretization of abstract mental processes or contents of consciousness. When the imagery of these concretizing metaphors involves an inanimate thing, property or event, we can speak of objectification; if it involves an animate (human) being, property or action, we have to do with personification or, in more elaborate cases, with allegorization. The author analyzes examples taken from Cholnoky's three best-written short novels, 'St. Bartholomew's night' (1916), 'Prikk's way to heaven' (1917), and 'Thomas' (1918). In conclusion, the paper deals with the novelist's position within the history of Hungarian styles. Cholnoky's style is a clear example of the developmental trend from Art Noveau via symbolism to surrealism. The author also raises the possibility of a parallel between Laszlo Cholnoky's and Attila Jozsef's world and style.

The most influential Hungarian literary review, entitled 'Nyugat' (The West), was founded a hundred years ago. This paper tries to find out whether there was a more or less unitary style that that periodical pursued, whether there is such a thing as 'the style of Nyugat'. The author approaches this issue by taking the most important trends of stylistic development in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries into account. He discusses symbolism, impressionism, and 'art nouveau', with an eye on how much these trends came across in the style of 'Nyugat', and how much they are thereby suitable for characterising it. The upshot of the inquiry is that the most appropriate historical category in terms of which the style of 'Nyugat' can be described is 'modernity' or 'classical modernity'. The author highlights six main properties of that style in the areas of versification, word stock, collocations, syntax, stylistic devices, and imagery. In conclusion, the author points out that 'Nyugat' had established a stylistic norm that determined literary discourse in this country for almost a century; what is more, it also determined the forms of thinking and communication within Hungarian intellectual life as a whole.

The aim of this paper is to provide an insight into the influencing factors of international police information exchange conducted by the Single Points of Contact (SPOC) and the Police and Customs Cooperation Centre (PCCC) within the EU. The author achieves this goal by introducing the relevant scientific theories and the results of the conducted quantitative research. The research identifies the influencing environments of cross-border information exchange and through this, finds supporting and hindering factors such as organisational structure, culture, leadership, legislation, and ICT environment. Findings can help decision makers and end users to overcome everyday obstacles.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie czynników wpływających na międzynarodową wymianę informacji policyjnych prowadzoną przez unijne Pojedyncze Punkty Kontaktowe (SPOC) oraz Centrum Współpracy Policyjno-Celnej (PCCC). Autor stara się osiągnąć ten cel przedstawiając wybrane teorie naukowe i wyniki przeprowadzonych badań ilościowych. Artykuł identyfikuje środowisko transgranicznej wymiany informacji, a dzięki temu wskazuje czynniki wspierające i utrudniające, takie jak struktura organizacyjna, kultura, przywództwo, prawodawstwo i środowisko ICT. Wyniki badań mogą pomóc decydentom i użytkownikom pokonywać codzienne przeszkody w tej dziedzinie.

The introductory section of this paper discusses the possibilities and limitations of the application of quantitative methods in stylistics. The author, backing up a dictum by Fonagy (1999), opines that statistical methods are indeed very appropriate tools in characterizing individual writers' styles. The core part of the paper compares three novels written in parallel by Gyula Krudy in the first months of 1913 'A pajzsos ember' (The Man with the Shield), 'Makviragok kertje' (A Bunch of Scamps), 'A voros postakocsi' (The Crimson Coach) and ten of his short stories, published in the same year, in terms of the length of the linguistic units (syllables, words, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs) making them up. The corpus consists of 54 120 running words (tokens). The results are summarised in tables, while the detailed data are given in the Appendix. On the basis of six characteristic measures (1. word length in syllables, 2. clause length in words, 3. sentence length in clauses, 4. sentence length in words, 5. paragraph length in sentences, 6. paragraph length in clauses), the author draws up the 'stylogram' of each of the four subcorpora (the three novels and the set of short stories). The figure shows that the hexagons illustrating the individual subcorpora are geometrically related as similars. The syntactic and textological analyses are complemented by those of the proportions of the three main parts of speech (adjectives, nouns, verbs) and of the frequency of linguistic figures. The proportions of adjectives vs. nouns, nouns vs. verbs, and adjectives vs. verbs, as well as that of the number linguistic figures vs. the number of clauses, are good indicators of the style of each subcorpus. The morals of the quantitative analysis based on a total of ten criteria are summarised as follows. Krudy reached a turning point in his writer's career in 1913, increasingly finding his real voice. (The author hypothesises that this turning point took place in 'The Crimson Coach' and especially in the short stories written subsequently.) That 'genuine' Krudy style is characterised by increasingly structured sentences and texts (growing proportion of clauses per sentence), increasingly saturated clauses and sentences (growing number of words in both), as well as an increasingly static and picturesque way of seeing things, and a growing number of linguistic figures.
