The article offers a comparative analysis of Désert (1980) by J.M.G. Le Clézio and La Prière de l’absent (1981) by Tahar Ben Jelloun. It concentrates on the ways of presenting Ma el Aïnine, the charismatic leader of the anticolonial uprising in the Southern Morocco (1909–1912), and strives to demonstrate that both works recast the story in the contemporary context. By doing so, the two authors can stress the similarities between the period of the colonial domination and the postcolonial era, and to engage in socially engaged writing that addresses issues such as minority cultures, immigration and social exclusion.

Syngué sabour and Maudit soit Dostoïevski by Atiq Rahimi : the Feminine and the Masculine in the Fundamentalist World The article aims at the analysis of Syngué sabour and Maudit soit Dostoïevski by Atiq Rahimi. The study is concentrated on the ideological construction of femininity and masculinity in the world dominated by fundamentalism and war (Afghanistan civil war in the 90s). The article researches some intertextual relations (between Rahimi and Dostoïevski) and the narrative strategies which represent the relationship between the individual and the political power. The article analyses the representations of Fez and Tanger in the fiction by Tahar Ben Jelloun. It proves that the contrast between these two cities, presented in his many works, illustrates antagonisms in the Moroccan society after 1956. The autobiographical thread of the way from Fez (the city of Norm) to Tanger (the city of Transgression), which emerges in such works as Harrouda (1973), L’Écrivain public (1983), Jour de silence à Tanger (1990), La Nuit de l’Erreur (1997), Sur ma Mère (2008), includes the issue of the writer’s political engagement and his objection to anachronistic social and moral norms. Tahar Ben Jelloun’s fiction, which is concentrated on the antinomy Fez - Tanger, becomes the area of difficult experience of freedom based on the symbolic breaking off with the father who symbolises restrictive tradition. This article compares the functions of rituals in the novels of Abdelkebir Khatibi and Tahar Ben Jelloun (La mémoire tatouée, Harrouda, L’Enfant de sable, La Nuit sacrée). The aim of the study is to show that Abdelkebir Khatibi and Tahar Ben Jelloun represent the traditional rituals of the body as elements of a hybrid language (corpslangue). This “language tattooed on the body” expresses the plurality of the North African culture and the contradictions of Moroccan society. It shows the Moroccan individual torn between the loyalty to tradition and the need for transgression. Key words: Moroccan culture, rituals, tradition, transgression

This article is devoted to the novel Les yeux baissés (1991) by Tahar Ben Jelloun and it analyses the literary games that are to question the ontological status of this piece of art. The analysis focuses on the hypertextual strategies (parody, pastiche), intertextual strategies (literary allusion and self-quotation), and narrative strategies (mise en abyme, metalepse), which lead to destabilization of the two genre components of Les yeux baissés, an epic story and a novel. Having appealed to the two literary traditions, the North African and the European one, Tahar Ben Jelloun strives to transgress, or, to go even further, to defy those two traditions. At the same time, he creates the dialogic and open form of the novel. Les yeux baissés, as a spectrum of irony and self-defiance, becomes the place of inter-cultural and intro-cultural dialogue, practicing polyphony, so typical of each culture that it goes beyond its limits. The article aims to analyze L’Écrivain public and L’Enfant de sable by Tahar Ben Jelloun, focusing on the issue of hybrydity which is discussed from the postcolonial and postmodern perspective (Bhabha, De Toro). The analysis concentrates on the oriental tale which deconstructs the paradigm of the novel and the autobiography. However, the article also depicts that Tahar Ben Jelloun derives his ideas from the oral tradition so as to, similarly as Jorge Luis Borges, give his works an intertextual and intercultural dimension. Through the nomadic structure of the tale, which is present both in the novel and in the autobiography, the writer rejects the idea of a conservative and monolithic Moroccan society and opposes stereotypes. This article proposes a comparative analysis of two novels: Les Funambules (Gallimard 2020) by Mohammed Aïssaoui and Beyrouth-sur-Seine (Stock, 2022) by Sabyl Ghoussoub. The subject of research is the relationship between novelistic techniques and forms of journalistic discourse. By examining the relationship between the literary text and the socio-cultural context, this study is interested in the presence of various forms of discourse in a literary text, such as the interview, the testimony, the report, the document and the photo.
