The paper is directed towards the wider background of false documents in the middle ages. The emphasis is placed on false documents that originated in the environment of the medieval ecclesiastical elites. The study considers the motives of medieval falsifiers, but the author places in the foreground the question of the ways false documents were seen or the reasons leading to the high level of spreading of false documents in the middle ages. The paper is written as a widely conceived account reflecting the observations of medievalists concerned with the problem of falsified documents. At the same time, increased emphasis is placed in the circumstances in which documents were falsified in the oldest monastic or specifically Benedictine environment of Hungary under the Arpád dynasty.

The following study is a contribution which pertain the issue of Christianisation of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. The study is focused on the activities of missionaries, who came from the monastery of Pereo to Pannonia during the early years of the reign of King Stephen. One of the objectives of the study is to present the prevailing views on missionary activities in this area. The study also brings insights into the ideological and political context, which influenced the directions of these missions. The author of the study deals with the question of how missionary activities were affected by monastic reforms that took place in the monastery of Pereo. This monastery was a religious institution, in which syncretism of the Eastern and Benedictine monastic elements spread. At the same time, it represented a foundation for the missionary activities of its monks in the Central European area. The study also tries to fill the gap in the primary sources by introducing a significant analogy, which was the mission of the monks from Pereo in Polish „Sclavinia“.

The study deals with the circumstances and broader context of the comita tus Somogiensis tithe disputes between the Pannonhalma abbots and the Veszprem (to a lesser extent Zagreb) bishops in the 13th century. It introduces the circumstances of the Somogy tithe donation, which was granted to the Pannohalma Abbey by King Stephen, and the gradual legal anchoring of religious tithes in Hungarian legislation. Following the introduction of the broader context, which had helped to form the bishops’ claim for the tithes, the study proceeds to focus on the circumstances of specific court trials, then on the mechanisms of asserting and securing the bishops’ and abbots’ claims for the tithes and, finally, on the methods of solving particular disputes. The study demonstrates the wide range of ways, in which bishops and abbots prevailed in disputes. Bishop from Veszprém based his claims on the right of bishops to tithes. This right was already secured by canonic law and by the Hungarian royal laws of the kings of St. Stephen, St. Ladislav and Coloman. On the other hand, abbot from Pannonhalma monastery Urias tried to enforce his claims with the false charter of Pannonhalma abbacy and with the authority of the king St. Stephen. The study thus emphasizes the unique confrontation between bishops and abbots in the disputes over the whole comitatus tithes.

The study examines motives of salvation, which were noticed in charters of foundations of Benedictine monasteries, later in charters that recorded donations for monks of these monasteries in medieval Kingdom of Hungary from the 11th to 13th century. In the work, I deal with textual variants that concern the motives of redemption of the donor´s souls, the content of devout donations and finally the historical background and circumstances under which the rulers, clergy and nobility came to a decision to endow monasteries. Rather generally formulated motives of salvation appear in less numerous sources from the 11th century followed by data on the content of donations. Since the beginning of the 12th century, the sources have given an insight into the broader historical context of formation of these pious motives.
