The article deals with the EU policy towards the SME sector. According to the author, formation of the single internal market made it necessary to formulate a common policy and strategy addressed to small and medium-sized enterprises. It concerns co-ordination of activities at the EU level aimed at improving the economic climate in which these enterprises operate. The sector of small and medium-sized enterprises constitutes the backbone of economic development and formation of the middle class in the society. Therefore, a special attention in the European Union is paid to activities of this sector.
