The title of the article could suggest the author’s assumption that a fi nancier is a human being, and the essence of the question pertains solely to whether he / she is a moral being or not. Actually, however, the text is also an attempt to answer a much more iconoclastic question: Can a model financier be considered a human being with the use of ideas and characteristics of philosophical anthropology? While taking trouble to answer both questions, the author comes to a conclusion that from a perspective of anthropological concepts it is quite difficult to regard a model homo pecuniosus as homo sapiens. Moreover, certain concepts of ethics question considering homo pecuniosus as moral human being. The main reasons of those doubts include essential features of a model homo pecuniosus, such as: uncontrollable inclination to counting, unlimited greed to possess, strong desire of power, a radical technocratic rationalism attitude, uttermost individualism, incapability of emotions, lack of sense of community feeling, moral indifferentism, and excessive inclination to risk.

A direct inspiration to write this text was a question asked to participants of the International Conference organized by EBEN Poland in 2014: do we still believe in the free market? Reflection on the question of the current market freedom has made the author re-examine the nature of economic freedom, particularly compared with its philosophical understanding. The result of this analysis could be shortly presented in the form of a following thesis: separation of economic freedom understanding from its philosophical roots, and over-use of this idea in the economic space by means of economic individualism, has led to a paradoxical situation in which the market becomes – mainly in the corporate environment – less and less free, while development of economy based on the growth of corporate power threatens the freedom of man as an employee, customer and citizen alike.

The objective of considerations is both to reach the understanding of inequality according to A.K. Sen and to pose a new query analogous to a heuristic question asked by this Indian author in his Inequality Reexamined: “quality of what?” By posing the question inequality of what?”, the author of this article attempts to demonstrate the importance of such a query for social policy, as well as its complementarity with Sen’s question “equality of what?”, pointing at the same time to specific examples of practical complexity of a process expected to eliminate social inequalities.

It seems that some of the facts of the rich and interesting but also very instructive bio graphy of Amarty Kumar Sen, a modern economist of Indian origin, allow to understand better not only his selection of issues from a wide range of the latest economic problems, which differs from many other economists and to which he has devoted his research works, but also to understand a system of values adopted by him. Het article is therefore an attempt to reach the source of thinking of one of the most interesting contemporary economists. Th e author tries to show the deep roots of his economic and social thoughts, mainly derived from the Hindu philosophy but fi ltered through the Western way of thinking, with many interesting references to the European philosophy. The author also attempts to outline a surprisingly rich area of his interests and to draw attention to a social rank of problems undertaken by him.

The author analyzes aid as it is perceived nowadays. I argue that, as a result of many factors, there has been an overflow of meanings of aid and thus not everything that is commonly regarded as aid is, in fact, aid in its essential meaning. I distinguish between aid activities and apparent aid activities and indicate that, at the same time, aid elements determine that a given action becomes aid. The distinction between real aid and an apparent aid activity is important due to the fact that granting aid is a constitutive element of human nature.

It is impossible to overestimate. It seems quite obvious that citizens should be educated. It is not clear, however, to everyone what such education should look like. The article attempts to show that this education should be based on the idea of bringing-up understood, first of all, as building of the inner human being (as meant by Socrates) and, secondly, understood as the formation of social engagement abilities.

Built on a philosophical and social analysis, the paper’s thesis is that corporate social responsibility is a new form of social dialogue. To support the thesis, the features of social communication (on the level of colloquial language), features of philosophical dialogue, and features of corporate social responsibility dialogue are compared. Following the presentation of the corporate social responsibility dialogue, the anthropological, economic and social advantages of a dialogue between companies and their stakeholders is described. One conclusion the analysis led to is that, in the current social-economic situation, further economic development has been increasingly dependent on a company’s dialogue with its stakeholders. Further benefits a company can derive from conducting a responsible dialogue with stakeholders are also indicated.

While some thinkers have already announced the decline of the idea of the social contract, the author believes it is definitely too early to relegate the idea to the dustbin of history. She therefore returns to the idea of the social contract and tries to read it anew, using the modern idea of corporate social responsibility. In her juxtaposition of the two ideas, the author points out many similarities but also significant differences between them. She eventually reaches the conclusion that the idea of corporate social responsibility is complementary to the previously accepted contract, a new approach that allows us to improve on the historical version’s lack of cohesion to accommodate our ever more rapidly changing world.

Due to the fact that in contemporary philosophy phenomenon of responsibility is becoming more significant meaning the author decided to look at its meaning in the context of liberal thought and comunitarin. The article is thus an attempt to compare the phenomenon of responsibility in terms of the liberals and communitarians. Included in the text the author considerations lead to the conclusion that both these positions differently perceive the phenomenon of responsibility, liberalism focusing almost exclusively about his understanding of the individual, while in the framework of comunitarian’s thought opens up space for its understanding in terms of the community.

The idea of social contract has been, from the very beginning, connected with a reflection on problems relative to functioning of society. Thus, from time to time, this idea was referred to in the hope that it would help solve, generally speaking, the fundamental mankind problem of a proper, as some thought, or optimal, as the other dreamed, way of society functioning. According to the authoress, the present-day social and economic problems are so serious that they require a new social agreement more adequate to problems resulting from globalisation. It seems, therefore, right to analyse a more and more popular in Europe and the USA concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and to verify whether it possesses all the most fundamental elements that allow to consider it a new social agreement or at least its outline leading to this idea in the future.
