W opracowaniu omówiono pojęcie spółdzielczej instytucji finansowej na podstawie działających w Polsce banków spółdzielczych i spółdzielczych kas oszczędnościowo-kredytowych. Spółdzielcze instytucje finansowe są istotną częścią rynku usług finansowych. Pełnią one funkcję pośrednika finansowego, a także instytucji tworzącej pieniądz. Przedstawiono zrównoważony model rozwoju dla tego typu instytucji finansowych.

In the article the concept of Cooperative Financial Institution (CFI) was discussed on the base of cooperative banks and cooperative savings and credit associations operating in Poland. CFIs are important part of financial services market. They fulfill function of financial intermediary and institution creating money. The paper also presents model of sustainable development of that kind of financial institution.
