Christian-Jewish dialogue is one of the most distinguishable results of the Conciliar Declaration Nostra Aetate, issued by the Catholic Church on 28 October 1965. The theological implications of the declaration are visible in Catholic theologians' reflection, especially in the USA and Western Europe. The echoes of this debate are barely audible in Poland. Similarly to Judaism, also in Christianity there is no one and only answer to the Holocaust. It even seems that the attitude towards this event, to large extend, polarized Catholic theologians. It so happens that conservative tendencies in theology are usually connected with the unwillingness to incorporate the Holocaust into the reflection on the essence of Christianity. At the same time, open theology discerns a necessity not only to include the Shoah in the theology, but even to perceive it as an indispensable point of reference as well. Particularly distinctive in the Christian-Jewish dialogue in Poland is the opinion of Father Waldemar Chrostowski. Apart from him, this subject was dealt with by Fathers Michal Czajkowski, the Jesuit Stanislaw Musial and Romuald Jakub Weksler-Waszkinel. Besides, Father Waclaw Hryniewicz presented an interesting suggestion.

Jesus of Nazareth was a Jew, which is not obvious to all present-day Christians, which is why they should be reminded of it. For some Jews, Jesus is becoming part of Jewish tradition these days, which is neither obvious to all, which is why the author draws attention to this dimension of contemporary Judaic faith. But both one and the other aspect are but an external manifestation of much more profound processes examined in this article. The ever broader scope of the findings of archaeological, linguistic, religious or mass media studies (which examine the impact of technological change on the methods of passing down tradition), as well as anthropological ones are responsible for the fact that its historical nature and an element of chance are nowadays widely accepted phenomena. The realization of this simple fact could significantly simplify mutual relations between the followers of Judaism and Christianity. Seen from this perspective, Jesus will be a uniting, not a divisive, factor.

Polish Catholicism plays an enormous role in defining and building the Poles' identity. The equating of nationality with Catholicism is one of the most striking features of that identity. The roots of this process go back to the 19th century, with Romanticism playing an especially important role in it. Nonetheless it was only the ideology formulated by Roman Dmowski and the National Democrats led by him that was responsible for the extreme nationalist tenor of the 'Polish and Catholic' combination. Its characteristic features were anti-Semitism and extremist chauvinism, while the political successes and popularity of this political formation among the Roman Catholic clergy gave it an air of social acceptability. The objective of the article is not only to remind the readers of this affiliation, embarrassing for Catholicism itself, but also to point to its vivid presence in Polish Catholicism of the present day.
