The article dwells upon the emancipatory potential of contemporary television, especially in the form of so called new generation of television series. The paper begins with the summary of classic criticisms directed against traditional television as expemplified in Theodor Adorno’s theory in order to illustrate the differences between traditional and contemporary television. The main objection against traditional TV forms was their anti-emancipatory direction. The next step is the characterization of so called new TV and the features of new-shows as well as explanation of the categories of discourse and emancipation. It is followed by the subjective survey of popular contemporary TV series in view of changes in representation of excluded or non-normative groups, which concludes with the claim that the predominant social world in neo-series is the “post-” world in which social, racial, gender etc. differences between people become irrelevant. The paper concludes with the question of whether this is a vision of emancipated and anticipated world or simply a strategy to neutralize and make invisible actual and real social and political conflicts.

The paper situates analysis of ecotopian character of represented world in Cameron’s Avatar in the general perspective of ecocriticism as the new movement in culture criticism, as well as the narrower perspective of ecofeminist philosophy and deep ecology that also have utopian of their own. The paper identifies basic strategies of cinematic representation as mirroring traditional binary oppositions structuring the discourse of Western culture. These oppositions are visualized on the level of images as well as expressed in verbal discourse and the super-oppositions that organizes the world represented in the film is one between nature and civilization (visually identified in technology). It is further translated into dichotomies of good and evil as well as beautiful and ugly. However, there is a basic ideological tension in the film between essentially leftist-oriented ecological approach and conservative discourse of both manners and social hierarchies, as well as recreation of the myth of golden age in the past transposed to imaginary future visualized as paradise lost and colonial fantasies.

The paper situates Wayne C. Booth's theory of ethical criticism in the context of aesthetic autonomists / aesthetic moralists debate. Booth claims that the gap between the academic practice of concentrating on formal aspects of literary artworks and our everyday, common relations with books can be filled by ethical criticism of literature. He proposes a special procedure - coduction. Booth's point of view, focused on the advantages of ethics for literature is in the paper completed by the theory of Martha Nussbaum, who approaches the subject from the reverse perspective, focusing on the advantages of including literary works into the ethical considerations.

These three essays are from a collection of Mieczyslaw Wallis' (1895-1975) papers on aesthetics 'Przezycie i wartosc' (Experience and value; 1968). The first is a summary of Wallis' views on the aesthetic experience, in which, on the one hand, he distinguishes aesthetic experience from other ways of experiencing an object (such as religious or practical) and, on the other hand, he analyzes the general features that aesthetic experience shares with other experiences and considers features characteristic of aesthetic experience alone. The second essay is Wallis' classification of aesthetic objects, which according to his theory are equivalent neither to beautiful objects nor to artworks. The last sets out his position on aesthetic values, and probably constitutes his most important and original contribution to aesthetics.
