An outline of the history of the Tour Guide Association of PTTK (the Polish Touring and Sightseeing Society), presenting a tourist movement in the Szczecin District in years 1946–2008 is written by Antoni Adamczak, a tour guide of many years. The article is divided into fi ve chapters where events of decades are described. At the beginning creators of tourist movement in Szczecin are presented. Bolesław Czwójdziński, Czesław Piskorski and Stanislaw Groński were among the fi rst who had started tourist activities in the region in 1946. In May 1948 the Guide Association was established in Szczecin. In December 1950 the PTK (the Polish Touring Society) and PTT (the Polish Tatra Society) were unifi ed into the PTTK and a period of growth of touristic service was started. Seaside resorts, West-Pomeranian lakes and castles as well State Farms are become tourist destinations. In 1960s–1970s many of tourist services were opened for foreign citizens from Scandinavia and the GDR. Therefore there was a grooving demand for that kind of service. Many courses and trainings for tourist guides were organized. New local tourist ideas were sprung. “The Kopernik trial along the 15th meridian” by Stanisław Gończaruk, regional touristic events in which hundreds of young people were participated and “The oratory contest for PTTK guides in Golub-Dobrzyń” are just examples of many other activities of local guides. Many members of Guide Association participated in works at the Main Board of PTTK in Warsaw. During the decades a lot of specialist publications such as guides books, description of tourist trials and travel brochures were issued. A quarterly Zachodniopomorski Wędrowiec (West Pomeranian hiker) was launched by a group of devoted enthusiasts of tourism. Many of members of the Guides Associations were honoured with medals for their committed activity. Many details with names of guides and important dates of events which took place during the decades are mentioned as well the list of chairmen of association and examples of guides’ budges are attached to the article.
