Objective – The paper discusses the reality of libraries of physical education academies in Poland, putting emphasis on the problems they are currently facing. The historical outline precedes the overview of library facilities, infrastructure, budget, structure of employment, education resources and legal environment. The attempt is also made to outline possible areas of cooperation. Research method – The author analyzes available literature, compares information acquired from the library websites and interviews the employees of all libraries in question. Conclusions – Libraries of physical education academies in Poland primarily focus on tasks directly related to user services within their own environment. They are not cooperation-oriented. Such a situation neither favors the brand establishment in these libraries nor increases their competitiveness in comparison to other university libraries.

Teza/cel artykułu - Artykuł omawia realia funkcjonowania bibliotek AWF, akcentując problemy, z którymi się one aktualnie borykają. Rys historyczny poprzedza omówienie warunków lokalowych, infrastruktury, finansowania, struktury zatrudnienia, zasobów edukacyjnych, otoczenia prawnego. Podjęto także próbę wytyczenia ewentualnych obszarów współpracy. Metoda badań - analiza dostępnego piśmiennictwa na dany temat, zestawienie informacji zebranych na stronach WWW i wywiady z pracownikami wszystkich bibliotek AWF w Polsce. Wnioski - Biblioteki AWF koncentrują się, głównie, na zadaniach bezpośrednio związanych z obsługą użytkowników we własnym środowisku. Nie są zorientowane na współpracę. Taka sytuacja nie sprzyja budowaniu marki bibliotek AWF ani nie stanowi o ich konkurencyjności w stosunku do innych bibliotek akademickich.
