The Upper Thames Patrol was a unique military unit. Created by enthusiasts and civilian workers, it became one of the most unusual Home Guard units. As one of the few HG units, members of UPT were equipped with motor boats, yachts and many small crafts which, although poorly armed and lacking armor protection, became one of the most important elements of every plan concerning evacuation of Londoners or the defence of the capital. Sadly, after the war they were overshadowed by the “little ships from Dunkirk” legend, but the UPT is steadily reclaiming its place in history.

Not much appreciated aspect of school education involving discussion about the events of World War II covers classes on the conflict conducted in the 6th grade of primary school. Teaching as regards this difficult and painful events is based on school textbooks which can be found in all backpacks belonging to the pupils. Unfortunately, they often contain errors and inaccuracies influencing the course of the entire educational process. According to the core curriculum, textbook content related to World War II is insignificant and classes focus only on the most significant events and issues.The reasons for these failures are diverse. Some of them result from copying the old mistakes and some were created due to repeating national myths. Many of them were caused, which should be mentioned, by the erroneous desire to simplify the educational material and provide students with shorthand vision of history. It is impossible to refer to such a procedure in a not reprehensible manner. In this text the author focused on the analysis of the textbooks most frequently used in Poland as regards teaching the subject “history and society”, trying to present the scale of the issue faced both by teachers and students.

Недостаточно много внимания в школьной программе, касающейся событий Второй мировой войны, уделяется обсуждению этого конфликта в 6-м классе Начальнoй школы. Источником изучения этих непростых и трагических событий являются школьные учебники, которые есть в рюкзаке каждого школьника. К сожалению, часто в них встречаются ошибки и неточности, влияющие на ход всего образовательного процесса. В соответствии с основной программой тем, связанных со Второй мировой войной, в учебниках совсем немного, а занятия сосредоточены лишь на самых важных событиях и вопросах. Причины подобных недостатков самые разные. Некоторые из них появились в результате переписывания прежних ошибок, а некоторые родились из национальных мифов. Стоит обратить внимание на то, что некоторые из них возникли из-за неправильного желания упростить материал и представить учащимся сжатое изложение истории. Такие действия нельзя назвать иначе, чем предосудительными. В своей статье автор сосредоточил внимание на анализе наиболее часто используемых в Польше учебников по предмету „История и общество”, стараясь показать масштаб проблемы, с которой сталкиваются учителя и учащиеся.
