O dilema metafísico da Aparição

100%
EN
The author of this paper analyses the “scandal” of the novel Aparição, which was flagrant at the end of the 50s of the 20th century but only ten years later, in 1969, its “irreligiosity” was regarded as inoffensive. The metaphysical dilemma of the novel, which aims to put the man in God’s position, became, with the passage of time, something rather obvious. On the other hand, the post‑1968 generation does not understand and accept the existentialist ethics of the “noble infelicity” for the sake of the humanist principles. Curiously enough, the fervor of the hero’s engagement in preaching the necessity of atheism at the end of the book could be considered nowadays as an act of violence. Nevertheless, Vergílio Ferreira’s novel has not lost its great literary value.

Terry Pratchett, joueur de foot

100%
EN
Sir Terry Pratchett’s “Unseen Academicals” shows the soccer world, but also the University, both of which are important. The title of the French translation, Allez les mages, is the first example of the naturalization strategy which focuses on football, but erases any hint of the British culture and, consequently, the reader of this translation is unable to see any allusion to the Oxford‑Cambridge old rivalry. Moreover, this strategy destroys the tension between the language of the “gentlemen” of the University and ordinary people, humble servants in the University but big ones in the football world. The rendering of the “cockney” by the Parisian argot is, in fact, Berman’s deforming tendency called vulgarization. In conclusion, the author of this paper believes that the French translator of Pratchett’s book, although very clever ar rendering of puns, took the wrong strategic decision, which his Polish colleague did not.

Czy wolno nie stylizować?

100%
EN
The article discusses the problem of colloquializing and archaizing of literary style in translation. The author agrees with Antoine Berman that such stylistic measures are difficult and result in many failed translation attempts but he considers stylization necessary and possible. His point of departure is Odile Schneider‑Mizony’s concept of “fictitious colloquiality” (oralité fictive) which leads to the creation of “spoken archi‑language”; in his opinion, the model of such translation in Poland is provided by the works of Zofia Chądzyńska. The author argues that this way of translating can be applied to other types of style, including archaizing, as proved by the successful translations done by Tadeusz Boy‑Żeleński and Andrzej Nowak.
