This article deals basically with two most important models of cultural memory in Western culture. These are the psychodynamics of morality that is characteristic for the non-literate cultures, and the art of memory that exists within high literate cultures. The author tries to understand how the two models relate to each other in historical context of their evolution, especially in the ancient Roman rhetoric.

The subject of this paper is an attempt to analyze the motif of the macabre in literary works of Stanislaw Lem. The macabre perseveres throughout all his work and constitutes an important part of his anthropological and existential views.
