This study deals with the person of Stanisław Kawa, the pre-war artillerist, who fought in the defense war of 1939 in the „Pomerania” Army. Later on he found himself in France and Great Britain. Being in England he was trained as a pilot and took part in many flight action as the member of 304. Bomb division. After the WW2 he remained in Great Britain being a lecturer at English universities. He died in Hamilton in Scotland, where was buried.

Krzysztof Jarosz On Land Surveyors and Navigators: Transcultural Dilemmasin the Literary Life of Contemporary Quebec The text is an introduction to the translation of the essay “Land surveyor and navigator” by Monique LaRue. It discusses specificities of the francophome culture of the Canadian province Quebec since its foundation as New France in 17th century until today, with a particular emphasis on the problems of multiculturality and its Quebec version termed as ‘transculturality.’ The issue of transculturality has become a crucial phenomenon of the 1980s due to the francophone immigrant writers who focused in their work on the problems of their individual and group identity while ignoring identity issues of the native francophone majority. The essay by Monique LaRue, unjustly read by an immigrant feminist Ghila Sroka as a manifestation of xenophobia, had incited in late 1990s a heated discussion which revealed a tension between native Québécois and immigrant population. The text provides a synopsis of the argumentation which formed a fundamental basis of discussion on the transculturality of Quebec in the late 20th century.

The ethics of Albert Schweitzer is subjectivist. He postulates the autonomy against the laws ruling the world and defines the general moral principle basing it on the inner experience of will-to-live. This comes from his conviction that we are not able to discover the meaning of the world's existence. He suggests an act of cognitive resignation - stopping to search for the meaning of the world and turning towards one's inside. Schweitzer finds the laws ruling the world to be cruel, allowing killing other creatures. A moral human being will never accept such rules. Striving to be faithful to the inner truth of his will-to-live, he will totally affirm the life opposing everything that happens around him. Schweitzer's postulate ignores the truth about the world. It is an attractive utopia of being good within a world that is full of destruction. Schweitzer, however, does not care that his postulates are impossible to be fulfilled.

Etyka Alberta Schweitzera jest subiektywistyczna. Postuluje autonomię wobec praw rządzących światem i określa ogólną zasadę moralną, opierając ją na wewnętrznym doświadczeniu woli życia. Wynika to z jego przekonania, że nie jesteśmy w stanie odkryć sensu istnienia świata. Sugeruje akt rezygnacji poznawczej - zaprzestanie poszukiwania sensu świata i zwrócenie się ku swojemu wnętrzu. Schweitzer uważa, że prawa rządzące światem są okrutne i pozwalają zabijać inne stworzenia. Moralna istota ludzka nigdy nie zaakceptuje takich reguł. Starając się być wiernym wewnętrznej prawdzie swojej woli życia, całkowicie potwierdzi życie, sprzeciwiając się wszystkiemu, co dzieje się wokół niego. Postulat Schweitzera ignoruje prawdę o świecie. To atrakcyjna utopia bycia dobrym w świecie pełnym zniszczeń. Schweitzer nie przejmuje się jednak tym, że jego postulaty są niemożliwe do spełnienia.

The article concentrates on the problem of intertextuality in Robert Lalonde’s “L’Ogre de Grand Remous”, based on Charles Perrault’s fairy tale “Tom Thumb” and the motto to Jean Giono’s “Deux cavaliers de l’orage”. The author argues that Lalonde’s novel is a pretext to present the problems of modern times and cultural references to Quebecness, Americanness and Europeanness.
