The paper presents considerations concerning the influence of normalizing the diagnostic variables with constant parameters on the arrangement of objects in synthetic comparative researches. There is proved that if we know values of the diagnostic variables and the normalization parameters we can predict the arrangement of objects depending on the values of the synthetic variable. The examples show that we may get different arrangements depending on the kind of used normalization. In other words, we may have an effect on the arrangement of objects by the choice of the normalization parameters. The considerations lead to the following conclusion: each arrangement of objects depending on the values of the synthetic variable is subjective. It depends on knowledge and experience of the explorer, who makes the choice of the normalization method.

In the comparative analysis of complex economic phenomena the measures of distance are used to assess similarity of objects. In the paper attention is paid on application of the Bray-Curtis, Canberra and Clark distance measures. Some consequences of strengthening of the measurements scale are also considered.. They appear, among others, when modified distance measures e.g. of Bray-Curtis, Canberra or Clark for data measurements on quotient scale are applied for measurements on the interval scale.

The paper presents considerations concerning the influence of normalizing the diagnostic variables with constant parameters on the linear ordering of objects using multidimensional distance. There is proved that if we know values of the diagnostic variables and the normalization parameters we can predict the linear arrangement of objects depending on the values of the model synthetic variable. The considerations show that we may get different arrangements depending on the kind of used normalization and distance measure. In other words, we may have an effect on the assessment of development level of objects by the choice of the normalization parameters and distance measure. The considerations lead to the following conclusion: each linear arrangement of objects depending on the values of the model synthetic variable is subjective. It depends on knowledge and experience of the explorer, who makes the choice of the normalization method and distance measure.
