The article presents organizational and training solutions in the field of leadership competencies of managers and officers candidates in the General Tadeusz Kosciuszko Military Academy of Land Forces in Wrocław. The basis for the authors consideration was to demonstrate that the leadership competencies of managers guaranteed the sustainable competitiveness of organizations and commanders leadership competencies were the guarantee of getting advantage in the modern battlefield. The authors therefore formulate directions for improvement in leadership competencies education, both civilian students and officer cadets, respond to the challenges of the modern business requirements and military units. The article focuses on the changes not only the development process of leadership competencies in the curriculum, but also to improve the processes of recruitment of candidates to the officer profession. Since 2007 the authors have participated in the design of educational programs (curriculum) for students and officer cadets at the Faculty of Management GTKMALF [WSOWL] and have offered system solutions for the development of leadership competencies. Their goal, however, was primarily an explanation of a complex education system of candidates for officers of the army and students in management studies in a military academy in Wrocław.

Maturity models are a kind of compendium of knowledge from a given field and a guide for managers translating knowledge into concrete actions which aim is to change and improve an organization. They describe the evolutionary development path which enables an organization to move from the state of inconsistent, short-term business actions to the arranged, monitored and managed ones. The article presents and compares two procedures of maturity models designing and design principles, that is criteria which a maturity model should correspond to as a result of designing, helping potential users in comparing and assessing of existing models. The aim of the article is the assessment of EFQM excellence model as to meeting the criteria of usefulness and application included in design priniples. EFQM excellence model is an example of a well designed prescriptive model which sufficiently covers the most important usefulness criteria.

The article presents the concept of army leadership which the behavior of commanders of different ranks of the USA Army from the historical perspective is characterized by. The authors present the evolution of views on the officer-leader role in the US Army at the background of armed conflict from the XXth and XXIst centuries. Evolution of army leadership is presented based on military doctrines and Field Manuals of the US Army. The authors also show the results of research conducted at General Tadeusz Kościuszko Military Academy of Land Forces in Wrocław on the implementation of the content of education related to leadership competencies of officer cadets – candidates for the officers of Polish Armed Forces.
