The Lateran Council that began 5th October 649, is an answer to the crisis caused by the question of monothelitism. The reason behind the Council was the events that had marked the beginning and attempts to introduce a new teaching on Christ. The doctrine of monothelitism aimed at a close contact between Catholics and monophysitists. The then theological debate no longer focuses on the two natures within Christ, but on His will and energy. The Constantinopole patriarch Serge taught that Christ had only one will. Acting together with the then emperor, the patriarch led many monophysitists to the unity with the Church. It was done to strengthen the unity of the Empire against Muslims’ invasions.

St. Augustine, beside his typically autobiographical work – Confessiones, left a number of statements about himself in his many writings, among which the outstanding place is taken by his Enarrationes in Psalmos. By reflecting on the person of St. Augustine, through the prism of his statements in Enarrationes in Psalmos, one can reveal and realize the great richness of what regards his moral and spiritual life. Augustine, being a priest, then a bishop, and fulfilling the office of preacher, refers to his life from before his conversion, recalls his baptism, and analyzes his commitment to the new way of life. His conversion and baptism are of particular importance by driving him from one stage of life to the other. This second phase of his biography, however, does not cancel out some struggles with worldly temptations and various adversities in pastoral ministry. The leading of „perfect” life is embodied in the work of God’s mercy. Confessiones efficiently assist to discover Augustine of Enarrationes in Psalmos, who reveals his heart and his person for the benefit of people entrusted to his pastoral care.

In the modern epoch there were many investigations of human spirit for discovering what is certain and permanent. All that started with the new philosophy of Descartes. His thought may be helpful in searching for truth as a nutrition for developing Christian life. The article undertakes the attempt to insight into human self. The considerations start with love, because it seems to be what should drive human spiritual life and lead man to his heart. The second part of the article contains what can be achieved by applying Descartes’ thought for searching for what is true and permanent. The third (the last) part of the paper is dedicated to God and His contribution to human love and cognition, and its consequences.

The author develops a threefold approach to the issue of time. First, tracing the Aristotelian and Thomistic understanding of time, he undertakes metaphysical considerations on time in its reference to man and God. Secondly, having de-termined the position of time in the world of real beings, he analyzes the notion of religious time developed by the Catholic Church on the basis of historical events whose heroes were people connected with the revealing God, in particu-lar with Jesus Christ. Thirdly, having identified the time of the Church, he re-constructs the specific way of experiencing time by a Christian. All these three approaches together give an integral perspective to man in time which – accord-ing to the author – may be best conceived as a human pathway to God.

The history of Jesus the Nazarene’s life seems to have been provocative for the Roman Catholic Church. In XIX and XX centuries it was marked by many controversies. Thus “The Gospel according to St. Luke” may be recognized as having the great importance in historical debates about the Founder of Christianity. The contribution of this article puts forward a historical approach to the work of St. Luke, which is acclaimed as a worth amid all the writings about Jesus Christ, and the beginning of the Church. The gospel of St. Luke is distinguished by its original and methodical manner of writing, which features its historical character. The author refers to “Antiquities of the Jews” by Flavius Josephus, as this work is devoted to the parallel time to that of Jesus Christ’s life and the beginning of the Christianity. With comparing the lives and works of Luke and Flavius, the historical aspect of “The Gospel according to St. Luke” may be appreciated and shown more clearly.
