A contemporary research organization, as a participant in research activities, represents a permanently learning system producing new knowledge. It works in the conditions of global information processes, which requires reduced time for response. An organization has to face a challenge of founding and utilization of its accumulated stock of knowledge. Therefore, it requires knowledge management methods. The article gives introduction to the concept of knowledge management, discusses the involved technologies (knowledge engineering), possibilities, procedures, infrastructures and compensation schemes required to implement a knowledge management method, barriers preventing the use of a knowledge management method in an organization. Development of IT-infrastructure of knowledge in an organization, which is the most labor-intensive stage, is given in the author's interpretation. Although IT-solutions support the process of knowledge management, they won't be sufficient when measures are not taken in an organization for fostering culture of joint work and joint access to information. Therefore, effective knowledge management requires the balance between information and humanitarian technologies. Knowledge management (web-site structure) development in G.M.Dobrov STEPS Center is demonstrated.
