W 1525 r. przestała istnieć diecezja pomezańska. Dalsze religijne dzieje terenu Żuław i Powiśla związane były z diecezją chełmińską, od 1821 r. z diecezją warmińską, a od 1925 r. także z diecezją gdańską. Artykuł prezentuje uwarunkowania polityczne, duszpasterskie, międzywyznaniowe, obyczajowe i ekonomiczne życia kleru katolickiego na omawianym terenie od XVI w. do zakończenia II wojny światowej.

In 1525 the Pomezanian diocese ceased to exist. Further religious history of the area of the Vistula Lowlands and Powiśle was associated with the diocese of Chelmno, since 1821 the diocese of Warmia and since 1925 also with the diocese of Gdansk. The article presents the political, pastoral, interreligious, moral and economic conditions of life of the Catholic clergy inhabiting the region from the sixteenth century to the end of World War II.

From the mid-19th century there took place important changes in the German judicial system including the prison system, which was to lead to the resocialization and returning prisoners to social life. An essential element of those actions was the regular pastoral care, the introduction of full-time chaplains to prisons, teaching and religious education of juvenile criminals, the promotion of reading and the integration of former prisoners with their family and local community. All those actions were consistently introduced from the mid-19th century also in the prison of Elbląg. The article presents the complicated beginnings of the Evangelical prison ministry in Elbląg, the figures of chaplains, methods of pastoral influence and aims and the composition of Verein zur Fürsorge für entlassene Sträflinge im Elbinger Kreise set up in 1873.

Seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts kam es zu wesentlichen Veränderungen in der deutschen Justiz, darunter auch im Gefängniswesen, das zur Resozialisierung und zur Rückkehr von Gefangenen in das gesellschaftliche Leben führen sollte. Wichtige Elemente bei diesen Bemühungen waren eine regelmäßige Seelsorge, die Einführung von festangestellten Pfarrern in den Gefängnissen, religiöse Lehre und Erziehung für jugendliche Straftäter, die Förderung des Lesens sowie die Hilfe für frühere Gefangene bei der Integration in die Familie und in die örtliche Gesellschaft. All diese Aktivitäten wurden seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts auch im Gefängnis in Elbing konsequent unternommen. Der Artikel präsentiert die komplizierten Anfänge der evangelischen Gefängnisseelsorge in Elbing, die Persönlichkeiten der Pfarrer, die Methoden der seelsorgerischen Einwirkung sowie die Ziele und die personelle Zusammensetzung des 1873 gegründeten Vereins zur Fürsorge für entlassene Sträflinge im Elbinger Kreise.

W wyniku przeprowadzonej przez Armię Czerwoną ofensywy zimą 1945 r. w Prusach Wschodnich, setki tysięcy Niemców znalazło się w okrążeniu. Rozpoczęła się wówczas chaotyczna ewakuacja wojska i cywilów, głównie drogą morską. W jej trakcie zginęły tysiące uciekinierów. Dramatyczny los spotkał niemiecką ludność cywilną, która dostała się w ręce czerwonoarmistów. W zajmowanych miastach i wioskach żołnierze radzieccy dopuszczali się indywidualnych i zbiorowych zbrodni na cywilach. Ofiarami gwałtów i morderstw padło wiele kobiet. Wśród ofiar bestialstwa żołnierzy radzieckich były również siostry zakonne ze Zgromadzenia Sióstr św. Katarzyny Dziewicy i Męczennicy. Śmierć niektórych z nich miała znamiona męczeństwa za wiarę.

As a result of the Red Army offensive in winter 1945 in the East Prussia, hundreds of thousands of Germans found themselves in a lap. A chaotic evacuation of troops and civilians began then, mostly by sea. In the course of the evacuation, where thousands of refugees were killed. A dramatic fate happened to the German civilians who got into the hands of the Red Army. In the occupied towns and villages, the Soviet soldiers committed individual and collective crimes against civilians. As victims of rapes and murders fell many women. Among the victims of the rapes and murders of Soviet soldiers were also sisters of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Catherine Virgin and Martyr. The death of some of them may be treated as signs of martyrdom for the faith.

Infolge der im Winter 1945 von der Roten Armee durchgeführten Offensive in Ostpreußen wurden Hundertausende Deutsche umzingelt. Danach begann eine chaotische Evakuierung der Soldaten und Zivilbevölkerung, die in erster Linie auf dem Seeweg durchgeführt wurde und während derer tausende Flüchtlinge ums Leben kamen. Ein tragisches Schicksal erlitt die deutsche Zivilbevölkerung, die den Rotarmisten in die Hand fiel. In besetzten Städten und Dörfern verübten sowjetische Soldaten individuelle sowie Massengräueltaten an der Zivilbevölkerung. Viele Frauen wurden zum Opfer von Vergewaltigungen und Morden. Unter den Opfern der Bestialität von sowjetischen Soldaten befinden sich auch Nonnen aus der Kongregation der Schwestern von der hl. Jungfrau und Märtyrerin Katharina. Der Tod von manchen Ordensschwestern trug Merkmale des Glaubensmartyriums.

Po 1945 r. publikowano analizy powojennej biografistyki regionu warmińsko-mazurskiego. Brakuje natomiast dotąd szczegółowych analiz biografii powstających na tym terenie. Pełniły one w nowej sytuacji polityczno-ustrojowej Warmii i Mazur istotną rolę. Z jednej strony służyły umacnianiu regionalnej tożsamości i budowaniu nowej narracji historycznej na tzw. Ziemiach Odzyskanych, z drugiej zaś strony, kreowały lokalnych bohaterów, ludzi zasłużonych i wybitnych, których losy pozostawały dotąd przemilczane. W artykule przyjęto bardzo zawężone kryteria doboru literatury: 1. polskojęzyczne opracowania monograficzne wydane po zakończeniu drugiej wojny światowej, 2. dzieła poświęcone jednej osobie i prezentujące cały życiorys, 3. biografie związane z geograficznym obszarem Warmii i Mazur. Zebrano ogółem 109 biografii, które podzielono na: 1. Biografie naukowe, 2. Biografie popularno-naukowe i popularne, 3. Autobiografie. Pominięto natomiast biografie literackie (powieść biograficzna).
