Ladders as siege engines in the context of ancient military techniques and the morale of soldiersSiege ladders which have been known from time immemorial, constituted one of the important siege engines. Relatively primitive and easy to construct and transport, they could be used instantly in the course of conquering the entrenched positions. The aim of the article is to present issues associated with the use of ladders as means of conquering the entrenched positions in the context of ancient military techniques and soldiers’ morale. In the narration, the author has chiefly made use of sources which describe the military art in the period from the 4th century BC to the 1st century A.D.; beside the historiographical accounts, an important group of sources is made up of military treatises which offer a certain insight into the military art and the issue of broadly-understood fighting spirit of the soldiers. On the basis of the gathered material, the author tries to outline the challenges which had faced the armies that made use of siege ladders and the possible benefits which could have been expected from their use.

Divisions of war elephantus used to be one of the main type of military formations used in the Hellenic ststes. During the Mediterranean wars two species of the animals were used: the Asian elephants and the African forest elephants. Due to a kind of monopoly on Asian elephants, possessed by the Seleucids, the Ptolemies were forced to look for their own source of the animals in Africa. Physically, African elephants differed significantly from the Asian ones, and the differences affected their military value, which made the Lagids the weaker side in battles fought against the Seleucids. It is evidenced by the battle of Raphia, description of which is crucial in this paper. Apart from this issue, the author also discusses the question of physical differences between the two species, identifies the period in which war elephants appeared in Hellenic armies, and determines the type of weaponry,  organization, and tactics in fights conducted by elephant divisions, until the point of their disappearance from the Hellenic ststes' armies.

Treaties devoted to the theory of the military system belong to one the most important groups of ancient sources. Preserved works were created over almost a thousand years which left its mark on the quality and composition of particular works. They discuss the most interesting tactical manoeuvres and stratagems as well as focus on presenting training methods and application of particular tactical formaations in the battlefield. The article analyzes and acrutinizes information about war elephant units described in the works of asclepiodotus, Elian, frontinus, polyaenus and Arrian from the 1 st and 2 nd century B.C. The treaties contain information on the organization, armament, and the use of war elephants that cannot be found in any other sources. The article is the first work of the kind and thus is a synthesis that can be treated as a starting point for a further detailed analysis of the  phenomenon.
