This paper adopts the notion of metaphostruction (Wiliński 2015), the conceptual theory of metaphor (Kӧvecses 2002) and the corpus-based method geared specifi cally for investigating the interaction between target domains and the source domain lexemes that occur in them. The method, referred to as metaphostructional analysis (Wiliński 2015), is used to determine the degree of association between the target domain of business and the source domain lexemes derived from military terminology. The results of the metaphostructional analysis reveal that there are indeed war terms that demonstrate strong or loose associations with the target domain of business, and that these instantiate different metaphorical mappings.

This paper employs the background assumptions of usage-based Construction Grammar (Goldberg 1995, 2006, 2013), Frame Semantics (Fillmore 1982), and a quantitative corpus-driven method for investigating the reciprocal interaction between lexical items occurring in two different slots of a grammatical construction. The method, referred to as co-varying collexeme analysis (Stefanowitsch and Gries 2005; Stefanowitsch 2013; Hilpert 2014), is applied to the determination of strongly attracted and repelled pairs of adjectives and verbs occurring in the extraposition construction with to-infinitive clauses in American English. Using the data extracted from the academic sub-corpus of COCA, the author seeks to indicate that some pairs of adjectives and verbs co-occur significantly more frequently than expected in the it is ADJ to V-construction. Furthermore, the results of the analysis of the co-variation of collexemes in two different slots of the same construction seem to suggest that such strong correlations between these slots can be determined by frame-semantic knowledge and/or discourse-functional properties of the construction under study.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie wyników badań ilościowych i jakościowych nad konstrukcją wyrażającą ruch spowodowany przyczyną zewnętrzną w domenie piłki nożnej. Wyniki pomiarów istotności statystycznej leksemów występujących w dwóch różnych miejscach tej samej konstrukcji pokazują, że istnieją pary leksemów, które są mocno i słabo powiązane z tą konstrukcją. Ponadto uzyskane wyniki potwierdzają tezę, że semantyczna spójność pomiędzy najbardziej znaczącymi parami leksemów jest determinowana przez ramowo-semantyczną wiedzę.

This paper adopts a constructional approach to grammar and the collostructional method, which is designed to investigate interactions between lexical items occurring in two different slots of the same grammatical structure. The method, referred to as “covarying collexeme analysis,” is applied to identify the association strength between pairs of words occurring in two different slots of the German caused-motion construction in the soccer domain. The results of this investigation reveal that the relations between two different slots of this construction are determined by frame-semantic knowledge.
