The article analyses the imbalanced power-relations between the native inhabitants and the British colonizers in the South Pacific Isles as portrayed in Robert Louis Stevenson’s South Sea Fiction. It is argued that parallel to Stevenson’s detailed historical descriptions of the isles, the South Sea Fiction engages critically with the British colonial discourse as well as with the ideologically-informed accounts of the isles that had been circulat- ing in Europe following James Cook’s expedition. In the resulting fabulous entanglement of the white man’s narratives and the native stories, the disproportion in powers gives advantage to the white man’s sinister tales.

This paper offers an analysis of Walter Hugo Khouri’s most acclaimed but also most controversial film, Noite Vazia (Men and Women, 1964). The author of the paper discusses Noite Vazia in the context of the 1950/60s economic boom in Brazil. Against this background, Khouri’s film is examined as an original and far-sighted challenge to the state-ideology which boasted ‘ fifty years progress in five’ and regarded cinema as a means of promoting social progress. A close analysis of Noite Vazia reveals Khouri’s rejection of such a restrictive cinematographic agenda. The film features an intricate game of looks and glances in which both Khouri’s characters, the silent city and also his audience become engaged. Outreaching the bounds of the politicallyapproved line of thinking, Khouri stages a daring comment on the role of the cinema, and on the universality and persistence of such traits of human nature as voyeurism and lustiness

CEL NAUKOWY: Celem artykułu jest analiza uwarunkowań wpływających na podejmowanie aktywności międzynarodowej przez MSP a także próba określenia roli i znaczenia najważniejszych czynników strukturalnych i  stymulujących internacjonalizację MSP. PROBLEM I METODY BADAWCZE: Problematyka MSP stanowi zagadnienie złożone. Stąd ważnymi i istotnymi będą działania odgórne sprzyjające atrakcyjności nawiązywania międzynarodowych relacji handlowych, szczególnie w zakresie niwelowania tzw. barier kraju: (1) skomplikowanych regulacji prawnych, (2) biurokracji i (3) nieprzewidywalnej ekonomicznie inflacji.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is to examine the role and importance of factors: (1) company size on the value of generated exports, (2) the aspect of the country of origin of enterprise on the value of generated exports and also (3) to define relations between these two factors. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: SMEs are of particular importance for all micro and macroeconomic indicators. Their specificity and peculiarity, manifested in the possibility of fast adaptation to a turbulent economic environment, which affects their effectiveness on foreign markets. The issue was considered on the basis of the analysis of the relevant literature and the results of own research with the use of two-factor analysis of variance and χ2 test. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Based on the relevant literature and the organisation theory, groups of factors determining the internationalisation processes of SMEs are described and then export results for selected EU countries are presented. To obtain the presented research results, tools of mathematical analysis and statistical tests of independence were applied. RESEARCH RESULTS: The obtained causal relations and theoretical-empirical conclusions point to export as a factor stimulating SMEs internationalisation, which is directly correlated with the examined factors due to the lack of sufficient evidence to reject the adopted research hypotheses regarding the independence of the examined correlations. CONCLUSION, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMENDATIONS: It has been proved that the size of enterprises and the country they come from influence the value of exports generated by them, and a direct relationship between these factors has been proven to exist. It is important to determine the so-called country barriers, the elimination of which through the creation of conditions conducive to SME development on both the national and top-down EU policy level may favour the development of internationalisation of this sector.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: “Essai sur la Nature du Commerce en Général”, published in 1730, became the basis for formulating economic theories of Hume, Smith and the physiocrats, as well as for the works of Knight and Mises. The aim of the article is to present the economic issues touch on in the essay against the background of the review of the relevant literature in the field of economic theory, as well as the possibility of transforming economic models into practical structures shaping the economic views of future generations. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: Theoretical issues were confronted with economic knowledge among sample N=600 in 2016-2020. The chi-square (χ2) test was used to test the existence of statistical significance between gender and the understanding of the importance of economic issues. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The sample has shown lack of basic knowledge in the economic filed in the aspect of university economic courses. At the same time, only those surveyed who are active on the labour market as entrepreneurs, perceive the need to raise qualifications and make complete knowledge in the examined subject. RESEARCH RESULTS: Cantillon in his essay focuses on the "economic aspects of human action”. The results of studies conducted at the university have shown, that their basic knowledge in the field of economic sciences is at an unsatisfactory level. CONCLUSION, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMENDATIONS: Contemporary economics omits the entrepreneur in economic models and in the relevant literature. However, it is a key link, directly affecting both, micro and macroeconomic indicators. The connections and mutual influences described by Cantillon are favourable to thoroughly understanding of economic phenomena in real, economies world. This knowledge should be disseminated not only for better economic estimation, but also for a better understanding of events occurring in the world and the results of their implications.
