British policy with regard to the case of Polish independence during the First World War was mainly determined by British-Russian relations. After the Soviet revolution in 1917 the situation changed. Since then it was not only the question of the future of the Polish state, it was the problem of British relations with Germany and France after the end of the war. Prime Minister David Lloyd George was the man who conducted the foreign policy almost by himself. His two FO ministers A. J. Balfour and Lord Curzon were helping him to solve the Polish question in the best interest of the United Kingdom. In most cases it was against the Polish expectations.

In 1914 the British Parliament postponed the entry into force of the law on Ireland’s selfgovernment. After the end of World War One the British government headed by David Lloyd George had to solve this problem. This was not a simple matter because the Irish gathered around the Sinn Fein party did not demand mere autonomy but independence. The struggle was growing fiercer in its form of terror and reprisal. In 1919 the Polish Legation was established in London. Its political reports and reviews of the English press informed the authorities in Warsaw about the course of the struggle and about the discussion going on in the House of Commons on the new plan for Ireland’s self-government. The comments of the British press and the consequent feeling of the public were reported in a fairly detailed way.

The failure of idea of separate peace with Austro-Hungary and the uprising of Bolshevik revolution in Russia created a new British politics towards the future of Poland.
