The author, starting with Umberto Eco’s thesis on libraries that hide and allow to find meanings, analyses the meaning of library space and works it contains in the novel Adelheid by a Czech writer Vladimír Körner (1967). She assumes that they can be read both at the level of the textual world analysis and used to interpret the behaviour of the protagonists and their relationship, as well as at the non-textual level, as riddles hidden by the author for readers to solve.

Deceptive eights and The Czech Question: Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk’s writing strategiesThis article concerns the writing strategies present in Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk’s works, especially in The Czech Question. Firstly, the author shows the impact of the second edition of The Czech Question, published in 1908, on the discussion about the sense of Czech history. Secondly, she examines Masaryk’s writing strategies, showing to what extent they involve creating and, on the other hand, analysing Czech history. Złudne ósemki a Czeskie pytanie. Strategie pisania Tomáša Garrigue’a MasarykaW artykule podjęta zostaje problematyka strategii pisania obecnych w dziele T. G. Masaryka, zwłaszcza w jego Czeskim pytaniu. Po pierwsze, autorka pokazuje jaki wpływ miało drugie wydanie Czeskiego pytania, opublikowane w 1908 roku, na dyskusję o sensie czeskiej historii. Po drugie, autorka analizuje strategie pisania Masaryka, pokazując, do jakiego stopnia chodzi w nim o kreację, a do jakiego o analizę czeskiej historii.

Memory in words: On the inadequacy of terms (A Czech-Polish-German example)This article is devoted to the inadequacy of the Polish and Czech terminology related to the displacement of German-speaking communities after 1945. Discussing the example of the terms “Sudety” and “pohraničí” (Borderlands), the author identifies the inadequacy of various equivalents of these concepts in Polish secondary literature. The adopted methodology makes it possible to demonstrate a particular historical entanglement of the term “Sudety” and its incompatibility with metadiscourse (the language of research). The terminological analysis is the starting point for describing the memory of the historical situation in the Czech pohraničí after 1945. The study analyses material collected during interviews with the residents of pohraničí, including their own reflections on terminological issues.

The article introduces the notion of the “post-German” archive as an idea for further research on the erased cultures of Central Europe. The author questions the hierarchical and top-down structure of the institutionalized archive. Instead, she proposes to understand the “post-German” archive as an inclusive conception. It would incorporate various narratives, languages, and perspectives. In this way, the canonization of given motives can be avoided. The author pays special attention to the responsibility of the researcher. She illustrates the theoretical framework with examples from Polish and Czech archival practices.

The article deals with the idea of “haunted landscape” as a research tool in analyzing post-expulsion landscapes. I propose a new perspective on analyzing narrations concerning expulsion and resettlements of lands where a drastic demographic change took place. I use existing research connected with the idea of Jacques Derrida’s hauntology, as well as other analytical sources dealing with folktales of different regions. As material for analysis, I propose various records from ethnographic research conducted in the Czechoslovak borderlands, stored at the Institute of Ethnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, concerning the space of a “traditional house” and the new settlers’ views on their new home.

The article sums up the author’s experiences resulting from a field research in the north-western part of the Suwałki Region. The object of the research was a study of the relations between Catholics and Evangelicals in the former Polish-Prussian borderland. On the basis of her interlocutors’ utterances the author gives a chronological presentation of Catholic-Evangelical relations from the interwar period up to the present, showing how they changed over time. The problem of perception of the Volkslist and the usage of the concept of Volksdeutsch by both denominational groups is also discussed. An essential part of the analysis is the author’s endeavor to understand the identification of “Evangelicality” with “Germanness” by Catholics. She notices an interesting phenomenon: the mode of talking about the denominational group as a whole differs from that of talking about its particular representatives.

The article examines the memoirs of Polish soldiers who settled in the lands that Poland acquired after the Second World War, the so-called Recovered Territories. The author argues that these memoirs reflect different forms of conveying the stories about the ‘recovery’, i.e. the acquisition of the formerly German lands by the Polish state in 1945. Depending on the historical and political context, as well as the personal and collective experiences of the settlers, she identifies its two main forms: myth and lore. The myth involves stories that are considered authoritative and obligatory, while lore is a type of storytelling that involves stories that are considered flexible and optional by the people who tell or listen to them. She further analyses how the myth of the ‘recovery’ subsequently transformed over time into lore from the immediate post-war period up to the 1970s.
