The national-cultural memory of Ukraine

The article is based on the study of changing sociological, historical, culturological paradigms of memory in modern scientific thought, which gives us the grounds to propose the concept of national-cultural memory as a totality of any socio-cultural phenomena that have been endowed with ethno-cultural identity for the mass consciousness and symbolically showed itself in many “places” (geographical points, things, events, artistic images, rituals, names, etc.). This article considers main dimensions and forms of existence of national-cultural memory in Ukrainian culture. Its general trend in Ukraine is from memory to history and back to memory. This trend correlates to materials of Western culture. However, intellectual topos prevailed over materialized “places” in Ukranian culture. At the same time, Ukranian memorial traditions are more variable than Western ones. In general, this variability reflects not only general socio-cultural evolution, but also the main state politics of memory.

The contemporary Ukrainian culture: “mezhovist” or “merezhovist”?

“Mezhovist” (the boundary principle) is conceptualized in the paper as a leading sign of Ukrainian culture from antiquity to the present. Mezhovist is defined as creation of a set of elements of various qualities at the intersection of varied external influences on the border between one of the «centers» of the modern world and its periphery. “Merezhovist” (the network principle) of Ukrainian culture in the 21st century is recognized as a favorable factor in the social and cultural progress to “merezhovist”, perspective for most developed countries the “network society”, formed by the horizontal architecture of the Internet.

Величезна зацікавленість українознавчою тематикою в останні два-три десятиріччя є беззаперечним історіографічним фактом. Дійсно, за цей період вийшли друком численні теоретичні праці вітчизняних дослідників; маємо рецепції й безпосередні контакти зі знаними речниками останньої генерації української діаспори та відомими західними проумотерами Ukranian studies; успішно функціюють численні спеціалізовані наукові установи чи їхні структурні підрозділи (Націо нальний науково-дослідний інститут українознавства, Інститут історії України, Український інститут національної пам’яті, Український центр культурних досліджень тощо).
