Rak to jedna z najbardziej powszechnych chorób XXI wieku. Szacuje się, że w najbliższej przyszłości nawet co czwarty mieszkaniec Europy będzie nią dotknięty. Nie ma znaczenia wiek, płeć, status majątkowy czy wykształcenie. Coraz częściej choroba ta dotyczy kobiet będących w ciąży. Artykuł podejmuje trudny temat macierzyństwa osób ze zdiagnozowanym nowotworem piersi. Część teoretyczna wyjaśnia specyfi kę choroby i możliwości jej leczenia. Bohaterką przeprowadzonych przez autorkę badań jest kobieta, która jednocześnie otrzymała informację o ciąży i chorobie. Odbiorcy artykułu będą jej towarzyszyć od diagnozy, poprzez kolejne etapy leczenia. Staną się świadkami wyboru między życiem dziecka a ochroną zdrowia matki.

Cancer is one of the most common diseases of XXI century. It is estimated that one in four Europeans will suff er from it. Age, race, wealth or level of education are of no signifi cance. Each year more pregnant women fi nd out they have the disease. The article takes the opportunity of describing the motherhood of women diagnosed with breast cancer. The theoretical part explains the disease itself and treatment possibilities. It is about women who discover they are pregnant and have the disease at the same time. Readers will accompany her from diagnosis through to treatment. They will become witnesses to her choice between the foetus’s life and protection of the mother’s health.

Recent years show a noticeable increase in the number of systematic scientific studies about motherhood. Mostly, the birth of a child is depicted as a groundbreaking event, carefully planned in the biography of a woman. The future mother has many doubts, usually feels joy and satisfaction of the “blessed state”. Still very few publications touch the issue of women experiencing unwanted motherhood. In widely available articles about family, unplanned pregnancy theme is limited. Mostly apply to youngsters. This phenomenon, regardless of age, is a critical event in a woman's life. It should therefore become a research exploration area of educators and representatives of related disciplines. The article attempts to depict the situation of mothers facing unplanned parenthood. Heroines present experiences related to pregnancy, birth and childcare. Fragments of their biographies show both their concerns and moments full of joy and pride.
