Model of the generic concept and structure of functional onomasticsTheoretical onomastics works with two dimensions of abstraction: a) focus on the research of highly abstracted properties of the individual elements of the proprial sphere of language, b) a more advanced type of abstraction represented by the analysis of the onomastics as a whole, i.e. the view of the discipline “from above”. The properties of the a) dimension are subordinated to the b) perspective. The theoretical research of the “whole” discloses the conceptual and functional characteristics of onomastics, while revealing its structure and system. The concept of “onomastics as a whole” operates with the so-called functional elements. Such elements determine the contents of onomastics as a Whole. Functional elements are always ordered in a determined logical sequence, creating thus the “model”. Besides the functional elements, the model is delimited by the principles of a system, dynamics and process orientation. Every element is rooted in and determined by the preceding element. The first element in the model is represented by the “the need of the society to use proprium in the naming process”, while the “use of the proprium in thecommunication process” constitutes the very last element. – The impact on the definition: the onomastics is an interdisciplinary sub-domain of linguistics about the social need to name individual objects (phenomena), about the materialization of this need with the use of language as well as about functionalities and role of the created proprium within all types of communication scenarios.

The aim of this article is to capture the basic knowledge pertaining to the general theory of onomastics and explain the two dimensions of onomastic abstraction: a) advanced abstraction of individual elements pertaining to proper names as a class, and b) onomastics as a “whole”, as an even more advanced type of abstraction. An aerial view of the subject is presented. Theoretical research of onomastics as a “whole” enhances the knowledge of its nature in terms of its conceptual and functional aspects as well as its structure. The concept of “onomastics as a whole” integrates elements (categories, functional elements) that determine the “contents” of onomastics as a “whole”. In the model of functional onomastics, they represent “functional elements”. Besides functionality, the model can also be characterised as systemic, dynamic, and processual. Each element in the model of functional onomastics results from the previous element, which determines it. The “society’s need for proper naming” represents the initial element in the chain that ends in the “use of the proper name in communication” element; the relationship between them can be described as “onomastics and language communication”. In conclusion, onomastics can be defined as an interdisciplinary sub-discipline of linguistics studying the social need to use individualised naming, its practical manifestations in a language as well as functions and position of individual proper names in all types of communication. This general definition applies to onomastics as a “whole”.

The study is inspired by the lexicon of toponyms in Styria (see Lochner von Hüttenbach, F., 2015). The lexicon exemplifies the pre-German layer of Slavic toponyms, and their adoption into German. The study examines the data through the theory and methodology of contact onomastics, especially related to Slavic-German area. Inter-language adoption of names always involves a confrontation of naming and proprial systems. The naming potential/choices as well as the dialects of the adopting languages must be taken into consideration, alongside motivational aspects. The areal distribution also plays a very important role here (it considerably contributes to the research of pre-Slavic topolexemes and structures of proper names, as well as the geographical delimitation of the Slavic settlements and showing areas of Slavic-German contact). The findings are presented in the form of comments, models, tables, lists of proper names, and on maps.

Collection of Moravian and Silesian Anoikonyms – Minor Place Names, Characteristics of Anoikonymic Categories, Preparation and Concept of Lexicographic Processing (in 1964–1993) In the early sixties, a unique project (both from the organizational and scope perspectives) was started based on the decision of the Topographic Board acting under the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences – all minor place-names from across the whole Czech language-speaking territory were to be collected. For Moravia and Silesia regions, the project was executed by the Czech Language Institute of the Academy of Sciences (Brno). Surveys and interviews were run in all municipalities with the historically proven Czech origin. The lists of minor place-names from 96 % of all municipalities, i.e. 225,000 records, were acquired. Typology approach was used to explain the available records in 34,000 dictionary entries. The project concept was based on the unified theoretical and methodological approach. The essay starts with the explanation of the project idea and related logistical provisions. Then, a general definition of the ‘minor place-name’ concept is given followed by the terminology used, by the description of the categorization and classification-related problems, and by the overview of previous researches done namely by the historians. In the next sections, the methodology of minor place-names collecting and processing (i.e. compiling alphabetical, local, object-based, retrograde catalogues), creation of dictionary entries, their types and structures, as well as that of the explanation of the minor place-names is provided. Structure-type classification of the minor place names is described. This project gave a birth to many studies in the area of the general theory of onomastics (e.g. model analysis, proprial naming act, proprial areals, etc.). Some pieces of knowledge were formulated in these studies for the first time.

The essay’s aim is to trace the basic features as regards content, which characterize the Cyril-and- Methodius tradition in prosaic folklore, and which in form of a short message – regest – form a part of cultural and historici awareness. In folklore narrations in Moravia and Silesia, the Cyril-and-Methodius cycle keeps it stable position. The corresponding interest in this cycle is growing in dependence on the development in social and cultural conditions – e.g. in the second half of the 19th century in connection with strengthening the national identity (which found expression in the St. Wenceslas cycle in Bohemia) or with forming the historical awareness of so-called Moravian identity. It emphasizes the Christianizing and cultural importance. The present revitalization of the cult bears fitness thereof. The cult is spread especially in the regions from the South of Moravian through Eastern Moravian to Silesia (so-called wider Opava Region) and adjacent regions of the ethnographic area of Haná (to the region of Litovel). In Western Moravia, only a reference to apostles’ journey to Bohemia occurs. The essay is concluded with an analysis of names occurring in etymological legends, as well as with notes concerning folk etymology.
