The ”Digital Heritage – Culture for the Future” seminar held on 17 June 2009 in the Column Hall of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland was part of the celebrations of World Information Day. The event was addressed to representatives of the authorities and the state administration as well as institutions that influence policies concerned with the protection and access of the national heritage. The intention of the seminar was to present the digitalisation of the national heritage and the suitable storage and access of Polish digital objects via the internet for the sake of the presence of Polish culture in Europe and the world as well as for the identity of Polish society. The seminar discussed fundamental problems associated with digitalisation and examples of projects implemented in Poland. The summary stressed that digitalisation is not tantamount to plans for the next five or seven years, but signifies permanent activity connected with civilisational transformation.
The international conference “Digital Heritage: Our Hi-tech--STORY for the Future Technologies to Document, Preserve, Communicate, and Prevent the Destruction of our Fragile Cultural Heritage” took place in Limassol, Cyprus, 20-25 October 2008. The conference was organised by VSMM in cooperation with the Cyprus Government, the Cyprus Institute, the Cyprus University of Technology, UNESCO and ICOMOS. The conference theme was focused on a wide range of issues related to the implementation of digital technology in documentation, protection and promotion of a cultural heritage. A number of projects financed within the 6th and 7th Framework Programs, including Minerva, Michael, and Europeana were presented. Joining those activities might be an opportunity for the Polish institutions to increase the pace of technological development, in accordance with the recognised international standards and advanced solutions. The VSMM conference organised for 14 years has already become an important platform of exchanging information, opinions, and experiences in the field of new technology implementation in the cultural heritage domain.
