This paper discusses the notion of solidarity defined as a social virtue and as an attitude displayed by a Christian. John Paul II defined solidarity as „strong and lasting will to get engaged for the benefit of the common good, that is the good of all people and of each per- son.” Apart from the presentation of the semantic scope of the notion of solidarity and the outline of its historical development in theological studies, the paper presents solidarity as a virtue – an actual manifestation of love towards one’s community: it serves the common good, but it also enriches the person who loves his community. The family and the internatio- nal community are those areas where solidarity is best visible and where it grows. Solidarity manifests itself through political engagement, care for the poor and through patriotic attitudes.
Christocentrism is now one of the most widespread ideas in moral theology, allowing a coherent definition of the issues of moral life. The personalistic character of Christocentrism indicates the necessity of defining Christian morality in the perspective of the first person, owing to which a Christian not so much is directed by some outer law written down outside him, as searches for the true good, according to the principle of being open to the truth that is written in his conscience. A bond with Christ may be formed on the plane of motivation that results from undertaking the task of following, from the ontic rootedness as a new creature and on the basis of identification of one's aim with the aspiration that is in Christ. The „Chris¬ to-form" of human life gives a man a new identity and opens him to participation in the Trinitarian life. The biblical ideas that define the personalistic dimension of Christocentrism most fully, are the idea of vocation and the idea of the New Covenant, which have been given a significant place in Polish moral theology. Pointing to a dynamic and responsorial character of Christian morality these ideas allow an integral definition of the phenomenon of aspiration to perfection in love that is at the same time a fullness of personal life.
The author tackles the question of communication as a tool for building and supporting the communion of persons, but a tool unable to create the communion. Despite the attempts of experts in public relations it is not possible to create artificially a community of hearts and minds if common values joining the persons are missing. This is so because a person is a relational being who reacts to the messages that are sent to him or her with all his or her being, and expects others to enter the relation of love to which it is programmed by the act of creation in God’s own image, the image of God who is a Trinity of Persons.

The present article, describing the concept of virtue and its place in the formation of a person’s maturity, points to the social dimension of moral competences that have their repercussions in interpersonal relations. Virtue is a social capital thanks to the fact that it triggers definite mechanisms in a man, enabling him to get involved in the realization of the common good. It becomes a special cement of human relations when it ensures proper conditions for forming existential bonds with others and it shapes a personal way of experiencing the challenges that one encounters and of responding to them. The four cardinal virtues: prudence, justice, courage and temperance make up a cohesive quartet of attitudes that determine one’s ability to control himself and the possibility to help others in a responsible way. The supreme manifestation of the social capital is love, owing to which a man is prepared to give his life in the service of his neighbor.

History understood both as history of man and as a narration about the past is a school of life and a treasury of experience. History of man is also history of salvation that allows understanding in faith God’s salutary interventions. History of the world has an anthropological dimension and it illustrates the history of mankind experiencing the effect of various factors. History of moral theology is marked with the saints’ action and with theologians’ works. Theologians created handbooks and they influenced the life of the Church. The twenty centuries of Christianity have become the arena of transformations of man’s moral awareness; and the transformations were influenced by political and economical events, but first of all by outstanding individuals’ work. Evangelical inspiration has given the world a new conception of anthropology and it has shown a possibility of interpreting history in the perspective of being led by Divine Providence. The article shows such an understanding of history and points to the forms in which the Gospel is manifested in the history of moral theology. A gradual growing in understanding the evangelical message in itself is becoming a school of education for searching for good.

Poverty, perceived as a lack of basic consumer goods, gives rise to a whole range of outcomes which affect not only the material dimension of human existence, but also influence social relations and references to spiritual values. Attitudes which could be associated with involuntary and unacceptable poverty include: doubt in the Divine Providence, bitterness, jealousy and envy, blaming others, lack of gratitude and in perceiving good, laziness, lack of initiative, escalating demands, gluttony and greed as well as meanness. However, joy, peace, freedom and solidarity with the poor, as well as work and enterprise, are symptoms of evangelical attitudes of the poor in spirit. Attitudes to poverty point to a wide range of human behaviours towards possessions and in effect, reveal an individual’s sense of value.
This presentation indicates the plane of conscientious objection in the Church, criteria for discernment of its authenticity and the place and form of its expression. Conscientious objection in the Church based on the prophetic mission of summoning to conversion, has an individual dimension - clear testimony of life, and a social dimension also - in the form of actions to eliminate wrong attitudes within and outside the Church. In order to discern the situation that induces Christians to show their conscientious objection it is very important to listen to God rather than people. The decision must be made in an atmosphere of faith and love. The attitude of objection requires courage, but also prudence in the choice of tools and forms of expression of disagreement to evil.

Protecting of human life from conception until to natural death is part of the ongoing spiritual struggle between the culture of death and the civilization of love. The destruction of life is the fruit of the negation of God and the attempt to take over the work of creation. The tool in the hands of believers is the prayer that brings man to God and contemplates his work of creation and salvation in Christ and elevating the human person to the dignity of the child of God. The exhortation of the Gospel of life promoted by St John Paul II in the encyclical Evangelium vitae leads to perception of its value and prevents the banishment of human behavior in the face of suffering.
