In the early 19th century Łódź became a huge centre of textile production. However, the transformations in Poland after 1989 led to the decline of this industry. At present the city is looking for new forms of development, such as services, including tourism and culture. One of the most important elements of the cultural function in Łódź are film festivals, based on over 50 year long tradition of film making in this city. The aim of this article is to present the film festivals organized in Łódź, which are a tourist asset and a kind of tourist product (an event). They are at the same time an element of cultural tourism, part of which is event tourism, connected with festivals and film tourism.

The refurbishment of monuments through the introduction of a hotel function is an increasingly popular tool of restoration of their functioning. The hotel function makes it possible to generate an income that can help to maintain the good condition of the object and allows the owner to earn profits. The collection of monuments refurbished through introduction of the hotel function consists mainly of residential buildings: municipal tenement houses and historic mansions, such as palaces, manor-houses and castles. One of the niche hotel products are historic fortress objects dating back to the 19th and 20th century, in which accommodation and catering functions as well as auxiliary services have been implemented. In spite of the abundance of such objects in Poland, which is a result of the turbulent history of the country, very few of them have been completely refurbished and in some other cases refurbishment work is being planned or carried out. The article focuses on the analysis of requirements that must be fulfilled by military objects under refurbishment in order to ensure the proper functioning of the hotel facility. In the empirical part, the authors take a critical look at the completed and planned refurbishment of 19th-century and 20th-century military objects through the introduction of the hotel function. The research showed clearly that the proper adaptation of a military object to a hotel facility is very difficult due to limitations resulting from the location, architecture, history and specific character of the object.

The main aim of the article is to present the role of Auckland’s Pasifika Festival and the Lodz of Four Cultures Festival  in preserving and promoting multicultural heritage in big cities. There are several differences and many similarities between the festival held in Auckland, the biggest city of New Zealand, and the event organized in Lodz, the third largest city in Poland. These two events function in different communities and cultures, thus having  different structures. On other hand, they are both based on the  concepts of multiethnicity and multiculturalism, used to develop and preserve the multicultural heritage of the cities. Despite the different locations and backgrounds, both festivals promote similar ideas and produce comparable results.

Z jednej strony, te dwa wybrane do porównania wydarzenia funkcjonują w różnych obszarach i kulturach.

Autorzy przeprowadziliankietę podczas Festiwalu Medialnego „Człowiek niebezpieczeństwie”, zorganizowanego w Łodzi, a poświęconego głównie filmom dokumentalnym. Rozważania dotyczą zjawisk z dziedziny geografii kulturowej i miejskiej, analizowanych w badaniach nad wydarzeniami kulturalnymi, a także oceny tych wydarzeń i motywacji uczestnictwa w nich.

The Polish tourism industry has undergone a very significant revolution in the last ten years. Customers’ needs and expectations have changed together with the quality of the services provided. There has been a great transformation in the hotel market. Historic palaces, manor houses and castles, a great majority of which are located in rural areas, renovated and revitalised due to their hotel function, constitute an interesting sector of the Polish hotel market. The article focuses on the specifics of the market of historic residences with a hotel function, where fast-growing competition forces managers to use marketing concepts adjusted to the uniqueness of the product. Issues concerning pricing policies have been presented in a broader scope, along with the changes in the prices of hotel services in the historic palaces, manor houses and castles between 2002 and 2011.

The article presents the case study of the Mediaschool Film Festival held in Łódź, a large Polish post-industrial and post-socialist city. The authors’ main goals were to establish the number of the festival visitors, as well as investigate their structure, main motivations to attend the festival, and the level of satisfaction with the festival services. As a result, the authors draw conclusions concerning the role of the festival as a place of the film culture consumption, as well as its role in the development of social capital. The basic method of study was the survey, conducted among the festival visitors in 2011. It contained questions concerning the structure of the festival audience, the evaluation of the event, and the main motivations to attend it. The method was adapted from the event studies, which was a tactical move in order to place the research on the borderline between cultural geography and event studies. Other methods typical of cultural geography and used in the present study included participant observation and semi-structured interview with the festival organisers. The event is one of the urban festivals created after the fall of communism. It is visited mainly by young people, often connected with the Łódź film school. First of all, the festival satisfies the need for contact with culture and film art, thus contributing to the creation of social capital and the development of the film school in Łódź (a part of the cluster of film institutions in the city). The event is a meeting point for film people from Łódź, Poland and abroad. Thus it could be also described as an obligatory point of passage in film-related network of connections.

This article is devoted to the GameOn computer game fair organized in Kielce in 2019. The research issue was to determine the impact of the event on the development of Kielce as a ‘product’ and its promotion. The work is based on the results of a survey conducted with event attendees. An intercept survey based on the availability of respondents was used as the main research method, therefore the results cannot be representative. The idea of ‘place event’ marketing was used as the theoretical foundation for the analysis. The study confirmed that the GameOn 2019 fair was, according to the respondents, an interesting event enriching the Kielce ‘product’ (mainly in tourist terms). The research also demonstrated the positive impact of the fair on the promotion of the city, and consequently on the Kielce ‘brand’. The idea o f ‘place event’ marketing was confirmed through the case study selected for the research.

Wykorzystana w artykule koncepcja obrazująca proces event marketingu miast znalazła swoje potwierdzenie w wybranym do badań studium przypadku.
