Modern language professionals’ intellectual autonomy: The relationship between theory and practice and the role of the dialogue in modern language professions
EN
Looking at our academic teaching, we might wonder why our L2 students are so reluctant to embrace multiple links between fields of study such as intercultural communication or fostering L2 competence. The major aim of this paper is to point to the importance of integrating various theoretical contents, namely by enabling the students to "retrieve" them from their personal perspective. It is argued that referring, from the very onset of their university L2 studies, to discourse as a complex social phenomenon, might provide them with significant insights into the complexity of communicative practices both in L1 and L2, leading them gradually to discover underlying conceptualizations and making them more aware of crucial aspects of L2 acquisition and communication. In this way, we might also provide them with a basis for practical implementation of reflective, holistic models in their future professional activities. The paper winds up with the necessity for further exploring this important issue within the context of university L2 teacher education.
