The purpose of the article was to identify success factors of small family businesses and to answer the question whether the functioning of a family business differs significantly from the functioning of a non-family one. Theoretical deliberations on the sources of success of small entities were confronted with the results of the survey conducted among 103 small enterprises from the Podlaskie Province. The conclusions from the analysis of the collected research material highlight the characteristics of family business against non family ones of similar size and business profile.

Dane statystyczne charakteryzujące gospodarkę polską uwidaczniają wyraźne, trwałe terytorialne zróżnicowanie poziomu aktywności gospodarczej i społecznej, w tym poziomu przedsiębiorczości. Spośród czynników wpływających na rozwój przedsiębiorczości współcześni badacze dominującą rolę przypisują kapitałowi ludzkiemu. W artykule scharakteryzowano rolę kapitału ludzkiego w kreowaniu przedsiębiorczości, przedstawiono zasoby kapitału ludzkiego i poziom przedsiębiorczości w Polsce oraz określono zależności między poziomem kapitału ludzkiego a poziomem przedsiębiorczości w przekroju regionalnym. Przedstawione dane wskazują, że występuje wyraźna zależność między tymi kategoriami. Regiony, które charakteryzują się wysokim poziomem przedsiębiorczości, to równocześnie obszary o wysokim potencjale zasobów ludzkich mierzonym poziomem wykształcenia, posiadanymi kompetencjami w zakresie korzystania z technik komputerowych, stanowiące atrakcyjne miejsce osiedlania się i poszukiwania pracy

Statistical data characterizing the Polish economy highlight a clear, stable territorial differentiation in the level of economic and social activity, including the level of entrepreneurship. Among the factors affecting the development of entrepreneurship contemporary researchers assign the dominant role to the human capital. The article characterizes the role of human capital in the creation of entrepreneurship, presents the resources of human capital and levels of entrepreneurship in Poland, and determines the relationship between the level of human capital and the level of entrepreneurship by region. The presented data indicates that there is a clear relationship between these categories. Regions that are characterized by high levels of entrepreneurship are also areas with high potential of human resources measured in education level and computer skills, are an attractive places to settle and seek employment.
