The main purpose of the paper is both to present and to highlight the wide range of artificial intelligence appliance in linguistic research. I intend to define the so called ‘linguistic intelligence’ in the sense of machine learning, based mainly on artificial neural networks. Linguistic intelligent solutions seem to be not only up-to-date but also very promising in the area of developing and improving any intelligent linguistic tools, such as intelligent tutoring systems that are able to interact with human being, or the voice (speech) recognition systems that are able to receive, interpret (understand) and sometimes even carry out spoken commands. Finally, I intend to present the area of so called ‘terminotics’. The term refers to the meeting point of three interrelated disciplines: terminology, computational linguistics and linguistic engineering. This branch is also assisted by computer tools and new technologies based on artificial intelligence and machine learning. These (tools) are mainly designed for term extraction and corpora development but lately there are also some new possibilities to use these tools to increase the quality of terminology infrastructure as well.

Terminology planning is an important part of terminology policy. Strategies which aim at developing or regulating emerging and existing terminologies must be very well planned and implemented thoroughly. One of the most important element of terminology planning are terminology databases. They are supposed to be a reliable source of terminology standards, in particular in translation process. However, it has to be pointed out that not only developing new terminology databases is crucial, but also maintaining and updating of those already existing. This paper provides some results of the research conducted on the EU's multilingual term base IATE – Interactive Terminology for Europe. The research was carried out to determine the reliability of the already mentioned term base.

The necessity to standardize terminology has recently become obvious. Positive aspects of applying standardized terms are emphasized not only by academic communities but also by business since it results in more effective communication and finally in life improvement in many aspects (e.g. free trade, free flow of goods and services). The main purpose of this paper is, however, not to highlight the advantages of terminology standardization per se but to answer the relevant scientific question related to it, namely, whether it is possible to estimate the standardization degree of a single term, and if so, what are the reference points of such an evaluation.

The aim of this article is to present selected results of translation analysis of the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany into Polish. The Basic Law is the most important German legal act which determines legal order and division of powers. This article is divided into three parts. The fi rst part outlines general matters. The second part presents characteristics of legal texts and refers to the issue of equivalency. The fi nal part presents results of the translation analysis which was carried out based on two layers: lexical and cognitive. In the crucial third part of the article it is argued that an appropriate translation requires not only using suitable equivalents but also passing the speaker's intention and text information. The analysis confi rmes that a translator of legal texts is supposed to have excellent command of two languages followed by a sound knowledge of comparative law.
