The reception of mathematical approach to the Trinity in the XII century Western metaphysics

The subject of the article is a mathematical approach for understanding the Trinity. The method consists of identification of provenance of the three persons with multiplication. The author analyses the origin of the mentioned method in the Augustine’s works, its reception and development in the works of such XII century philosophers as Achard of Saint-Victor and Thierry of Chartres. Their teachings are treated from the point of view of Neo-Platonism that stimulates to pose the question of conformity of those theories to the official doctrine of Catholic Church.

The article is designated to estimate the potential of Ukrainian language for the creation of the new and activation of the old philosophical terminology in order to accomplish the first translation of Aristotle’s “Categories” in Ukrainian. The author treats peculiarities of original Aristotle’s vocabulary, its Latin interpretation made by Boethius and their Ukrainian analogues. The article includes a short introduction, where the history of Ukrainian translation of Aristotle is considered in brief, the observation of the mains metaphysical terms of Aristotelian logic (substance, subject, predicate, etc.) and of the categories themselves (quantity, quality, relation, etc.).

The first Ukrainian translation of the work of Achard of Saint-Victor 'De unitate et pluralitate creaturam' is proposed. Translator also adds commentary consisting of two parts. In the first part, author describes circumstances of the life of Achard of Saint-Victor, his place among others XIIth century authors and mains points of his philosophical teaching. The doctrinal content and history of the 'De unitate et pluralitate creaturam' are also exposed. In the second part, questions appeared in the process of translation of the Achard's work to Ukrainian are regarded, notably the problem of translation of philosophical terms in the context of present philosophical tradition.

The publication consists of the Greek original of the first five chapters of Aristotle’s “Categories”, Ukrainian translation from the original, Latin translation by Boethius and Ukrainian translation from Boethius’s translation. The two Ukrainian translations are made in different terminological key, basing, respectively, on original Slavic vocabulary and Ukrainian loanwords from Latin. The introductory comment remarks that the outcomes of this experimental translation are revelation of various strata of Ukrainian vocabulary fit for reproduction of the European philosophical classics, and also revelation of originality and separate philosophical value of the corpus of texts of “Latin Aristotle”.
